Transmission Impossible (E4OD to ZF 5 Speed Swap)
#481
Thank you. Myself I have pulled many of the E4oDs and swapped them out with other e4ods but I have never converted one from auto to manual.
I think the thing that would be most help full is a list of all the parts I need to grab. I have a friend who runs a scrap yard (I called him and asked what he would charge for every little thing I would need to convert my truck) He said 350$ with a 1 year warranty except on the clutch its self witch i plain on buying new anyway. Everything else im gonna try getting from the yard.
Did you have to do alote of (Metal fabrication) Like making parts / brackets and such. Was there need for welding / cutting? If not I feel I can take this one with little to know problems.
I dont suppose you have a list or could think up one do you?
I have made it threw your inter thread yet but plain to.
Did you ever get the wheels turning? Does it move now?
Thanks again.

No fabbing at all. I'll try and find you a list here momentarily if someone else doesn't beat me to it. If you've pulled a trans you have the aptitude for this swap.
Stole this from Nate. There are a couple other really good swap threads out there. Recently kellens did one with lots of pictures.
If you can, get the floor pan with the hole in it for the shifter. If you can't get it, you can use the one you have, you'll just have to cut a hole in it for the handshaker. The tunnel and pan are the same height, it's just easier not to have to cut the hole in the floor pan since that section unbolts from the cab anyway.
So the list should be:
-Transmission from a Ford diesel (6.9 IDI, 7.3 IDI, 7.3 PSD, doesn't matter)
-Clutch and pressure plate - it's recommended to upgrade to a SMF during the process
-Pedal box from a '92-'97 truck (F-150 (92-96) ,250 or 350 it just has to be the OBS style not the newer '97 F-150 style) -- it's also wise to do the heim joint fix now too to eliminate that bushing issue in the future
-Clutch master and slave cylinder
-Drive shafts from a manual truck with the same cab configuration as yours (if you can get them -- if not you will have to have yours lengthened and shortened by I believe 5 & 3/8" -- Bill knows for sure )
-Manual PCM if you can get it (optional but makes the swap cleaner)
-ZF5 Transmission Crossmember
-Manual Transmission wiring harness (again, optional but makes the swap simpler)
-Clutch Master Cylinder safety switch
-Manual Transmission Truck Steering Column (or you can swap the covers and key cylinder lock lever onto your Auto column)
-Manual gauge cluster (or at least the blank panel that covers the auto shift indicator)
All the consumables you'll need (fluids, bearings, etc)
A few buddies and a cooler or fridge full of the cold beverages of your choice and you can have it done in a weekend.
Also, I think many of the guys would agree with me that having a transmission jack available makes this a lot safer and easier that wrestling that thing in there by hand or on a floor jack.
That's pretty much it as far as I can remember. Bill (ReBilld) is the expert on this. He has done 3 or 4 of these now. If I am forgetting something I'm sure he can point out what it would be.
The starter from your E4OD truck is the same, so you can reuse that as well.
Honestly if you can, get a parts truck and pull all this stuff from it. Having it all there in one place makes it a LOT easier and then you can sell the balance of the truck as parts (or keep them as spares).

Cant remember if I said this or not but I have a friend who owns a scrap yard - Im pretty sure I can rob a truck of all the stuff I need for less than 400$.
He cuts me deals all the time my e4od is 250$ with a one year warranty. So im guessing he will let me violate some f350 psd dually like mine for little to nothing.
My major worry is teaching my wife to drive a stick but we all know once you caught the fever of the manuals it doesn't let go.
Once again I wanna say thank you to every person who posted on this -I will go through tomorrow and give REP. Thanks.
Did not mean to .

The easiest way around this is to search for parts using the 93 as base, as they are the same for the early 94s. The later 94s use the same parts as the 95s, so using the 95 year works for these.

tunnel cover
Yup, T-case's are the same. I sell alot of parts for these trucks, and as we speak I'm shipping the complete lot of parts for a E4OD to 5-speed swap to a guy in So. California that is doing exactly what you want to do. If you would like more detailed info, PM me, I'm sure we could work something out!
