DIY cam phasers

I just got done with the infamous cam phaser job on my 07 5.4. After opening her up decided to go all out. 2 new cams, rockers, phasers, timing chains, guides & tensioners, and vct selonoids. After 2 days got it done and runs perfect! No ticking or rattling noices at all. Just wore out from job! But saved a ton doing it myself! Just letting it be known that it isn't that bad if you take your time..

Question I am glad it worked

I am having the exact same problem. After 20-30 minutes of running it runs rough at idle until I give it some gas (over 1,200 rpms). How much appx. did all this cost and did a regular Haynes book have all the info?

It was about 1500.00 in parts and gaskets and such. I pulled oil pan as well. Lots of sludge and debris in there from chain guides and chain slapping cover. I have found from ford that pass. Side cam is known for wearing more. I got my info from a friend that is Ford mech in another state. I'm sure haynes will have all the info u need. Just take your time. It took me 2 days cause i'm not a mechanic by trade but it's not that bad..

Thank you for the reply...looks like a soon to be weekend job....one last question though, did you need any special tools?...The dealership had said (not that I believe them) that I couldn't do it because it required special tools only they had...

None if you are going to replace both timing chains. Which i recomend you do.You have to break down a/c line to get pass valve cover off. A vacuum pump to pull system into a vacuum to recharge it. I borrowed a buddy of mines to do that. Filled mine back with 5w20 Mobil 1. Changed after 2k miles just to get any junk out. Used motorcraft oil filter as well. Back flow preventer on it allows for a nice quiet start up. No ticking or knockin like there's no oil in the heads! It fixed mine.94k on her now..

Is your truck knocking and sounds like a diesel but clears up after increasing rpms? Have u cleaned throttle body and map sensor?

After running 20-30 minutes I will stop at a light or at a drive thru and it will start to run rough until I give it gas. If I stick it in neutral and gun it above 1,200 rpms it will idle down fine until I move forward and give it a little gas then it will run rough again. Very frustrating. It only happens after it warms up. never when cold. I did clean the Maf sensor last night. Have not cleaned the throttle body. I have 95k on truck, and at 80k the dealership cleaned all the fuel injectors. I have used only motorcraft oil and filters but have only owned the truck for 25k miles. Who knows how someone else took care of it.

Driving it today and it only happened a couple of times and it was real hot out. before it only happened on long trips, maybe once or twice, but it seems to be slowly getting worse.

I just have to ask. You had to do this on an aught seven? How many miles were on it? why did you have so much sludge? You said it just wore out from the job. How was it abused? I know that's a lot of questions, but I sure would like to know.

93k on truck. I was wore out from job. Not the truck!! I don't know why there was sludge in pan. I serviced regularly. I use it daily for my work. I pull a trailer that's about 3000 lbs. But its all local short trips. Nothing hard core.
