1979 460 oil pans 2WD vs 4WD. Sump locations.

Hello,

I have acquired a 1979 460 out of a pickup. I think, but am not sure, that it was a 4x4. It is a front sump design.

Are 2wd oil pans the same, or are they rear sump?? The typical parts websites offer 2 different oil pumps. Which is which, or are they actually the same?

I am swapping the 460 into a 1986 2wd F350, so I need to know if a front sump will work in that application....

Thanks!

460 into 4x4 requires a rear sump pan so if it's a front sump then it should have been a 2wd.
Once you put it in an '85 I am lost because I know a lot changes from '80 on, but I'm sure the front sump will fit.

Yes 2 wd truck or car motor has a front sump pan and that is where the pick up tube goes into the front sump because it is the lowest point.

You do not have to change the pan but you can hit it with the axle pumpkin, do not ask how I know this.

The usual route is to change to a rear sump pan and change the pick up tube, I hear it has to be tac welded in place??? to the pump????

On a 351m I put a new oil pump on and the pick up tube was threaded in to the pump.
I believe you only have to change the pick up tube?? I just ordered one from auto parts store $30 bucks ??

Put this question in the eng forums for some more input on it. On a side note you might have interference with the passenger side exhaust manifold hitting the frame.

I think car/2wd truck motors have a different one versus a 4wd. I have seen people just notch the top edge of the frame rail. (not a good idea IMO).

Just reread your post: I think a 4x4 pan will work fine in a 2wd but since its going to a 86 I have no experience......

Great time to go to headers, fenderwell is the easy way to go, once again IMO. All this information is from that I understand from this site so its not 100% guarantee correct.

I got to look at a '90 F-450 460 and my own '86 F-350 with diesel both use rear sump pans. Thanks for the heads up on the RH exhaust, that is going to be an issue! Double gulp.

Passenger side ex manifold will interfere. I just bought a one new on ebay for around $80 delivered. Also, you can get a new oil pan, with pickup tube as a kit from Ford Motorsport for $150. I just had to fix these issues with my truck from the previous owner.

So what manifold will fit my chassis? I bought a salvage one today from a 1989 but the ports are wrong. What year of 460 manifold has similar ports to the 79 but will fit the 86 chassis?

I will start looking on ebay...

Hey I only found the RH exhaust manifold on ebay to fit '88 and up. Do they make them for 87 and older? Who was your supplier?

This is the one I bought and it looks like a substantial piece from what I can tell so far.

Uh....L&L headers or maybe a 79 460 2wd or 4wd truck R/H exhaust manifold will tuck closer to the block? And match your ports???

Thanks for the help so far everyone.

Here are some more photos of the 1979 manifold I have that looks like it is too wide and will interfere with the frame.

So can you confirm that your ebay manifold does not have the offset that mine has... have you got it yet? Still a little foggy how this manifold from a 1979 will work with my 86, and how the ebay vendor says it fits 75-87.
Thanks!

I just reread your original post. Since you're installing the engine is a 2wd I don't think you'll have any issues. The issue is with 73-79 4x4 and using exhaust manifolds from a car because they flare out and interfere with the frame.

A number of years ago I pulled a 460 from an old Ambulance and installed it in a '84 2wd
F350 and had no issues.

Thanks KG. I will try hanging that engine with the 79 manifold since they are the same. I assumed it would be a problem, too, because I looked at how much more my '90 has the manifold tucked close to the engine and how the 79 manifold flares out more. I am sure it will all work out.

Does anybody know if I will have trouble installing a 1989 pickup truck oil pan, dipstick, pump, and pickup on this 1979 pickup motor? It is the screw-in dipstick tube variant.
