1979 460 oil pans 2WD vs 4WD. Sump locations.
Hello,
I have acquired a 1979 460 out of a pickup. I think, but am not sure, that it was a 4x4. It is a front sump design.
Are 2wd oil pans the same, or are they rear sump?? The typical parts websites offer 2 different oil pumps. Which is which, or are they actually the same?
I am swapping the 460 into a 1986 2wd F350, so I need to know if a front sump will work in that application....
Thanks!

Yes 2 wd truck or car motor has a front sump pan and that is where the pick up tube goes into the front sump because it is the lowest point.
You do not have to change the pan but you can hit it with the axle pumpkin, do not ask how I know this.
The usual route is to change to a rear sump pan and change the pick up tube, I hear it has to be tac welded in place??? to the pump????
On a 351m I put a new oil pump on and the pick up tube was threaded in to the pump.
I believe you only have to change the pick up tube?? I just ordered one from auto parts store $30 bucks ??
Put this question in the eng forums for some more input on it. On a side note you might have interference with the passenger side exhaust manifold hitting the frame.
I think car/2wd truck motors have a different one versus a 4wd. I have seen people just notch the top edge of the frame rail. (not a good idea IMO).
Just reread your post: I think a 4x4 pan will work fine in a 2wd but since its going to a 86 I have no experience......
Great time to go to headers, fenderwell is the easy way to go, once again IMO. All this information is from that I understand from this site so its not 100% guarantee correct.

Hey I only found the RH exhaust manifold on ebay to fit '88 and up. Do they make them for 87 and older? Who was your supplier?

Thanks for the help so far everyone.
Here are some more photos of the 1979 manifold I have that looks like it is too wide and will interfere with the frame.
So can you confirm that your ebay manifold does not have the offset that mine has... have you got it yet? Still a little foggy how this manifold from a 1979 will work with my 86, and how the ebay vendor says it fits 75-87.
Thanks!

I just reread your original post. Since you're installing the engine is a 2wd I don't think you'll have any issues. The issue is with 73-79 4x4 and using exhaust manifolds from a car because they flare out and interfere with the frame.
A number of years ago I pulled a 460 from an old Ambulance and installed it in a '84 2wd
F350 and had no issues.

Does anybody know if I will have trouble installing a 1989 pickup truck oil pan, dipstick, pump, and pickup on this 1979 pickup motor? It is the screw-in dipstick tube variant.
