reassembly of 2.9 engine
Newbee to the forum, lots of info here, I like it.
I am reassembling my 2.9 to go back into my BII and the Haynes manual does not explain well enough the location of the #1 piston, cam lobe locations, timing marks.
The timing marks moved as I did not put a thick enough washer between the crank bolt and the lower sprocket and it turned on me and threw the gross timing off.
The heads are off, cam is in, crank in....how do I line up all this, or should I get a FSM ?
Thanks

Someone who has rebuilt a 2.9 hopefully will chime in.
I have done a couple of 2.8s, but they have timing gears and marks to align, so its pretty simple.
The 2.9 is a touchy/finicky motor, I would suggest strongly the Ford manual........Chilton and Haynes seem to omit many small details and leave you scratching your head.

Hey, OldJunk; How do you time the 2.8? I think my timing is off, it has been running pretty rough and I don't know what to do. It idles high sometimes when I start is and I gotta kick the gas peddle to stop it and sometimes it will be in idle and just die... Any suggestions?

Thanks, even though I did not get a response, but it was obvious where the pistons, cam and gears went just by finding the two flat spots on the cam on #1 piston, making sure #1 piston was all the way up and the two dots on the cam and crank gear were lined up as in the Haynes manual ( which is a terrible book, btw).

I bought a Chilton for my Bronco, unfortunately I have no idea what it's trying to say to me when I am reading it "is this even talking about my truck or vehicles in general?"
"this book is BS, wth?"
that's how I feel when looking at Sheila and the Chilton book.
