borg warner 1356 problems

Pretty much, unless you are lucky enough to destroy the chain. Which is highly unlikely before the planetary, oiler, and fork go. Only way to see is to bust it open. By the time you have it opened up and the chain out, you are about 2/3 done with a re-build. That's why it's been said to find a t-case in a yard.

Having just torn one down, twice, I have a few thoughts. First, I don't think the transfer case has enough mass to make the whole truck shake violently. I would take a serious look at the U-Joints, flange bolts, and transmission/motor mounts first. Secondly, when it comes time to drop it, it's fairly simple. I would suggest pulling the seats and rolling back the floor covering though; You may find it easier to access the upper bolts. When disconecting the TC shift linkage, be careful not to reef too hard on the linkage at the case. If you damage the shaft that the shift plate rides on, you could find yourself stuck in one range or another because the shift plate can move allowing the shift forks to disengage from the plate. There's an excellent write up over on Pirate 4x4 with quite a few pictures ( COMPLETE BW 1356 teardown pics - Pirate4x4.Com Bulletin Board ) This particular bookmark goes to a post mid way down the page, so you'll have to scroll back to the top on your own...Sorry....
Anyhow, just my .02 cents !
