at end of rope

I have a 1991 F-250 with 88,000 miles. I bought this from a older guy who drove it to work and home everynight. parked it one night whent out to get in it to go some place it had no reverse and neutral acted like a forward gear! the only answeres I can get from any one is tranny is junk! I can't see that not for how he drove it. any ideas?

I assume this is an automatic?

It's not unusual for parts of the shift indicator cable to break and cause it to point to the wrong gear. Will it go in reverse if you manually move the shift lever one notch, ignoring the indicator?

This sounds like it's the E4OD. I've heard the filter inside the tranny pan can slip out abit causing it to loose reverse.

yes it is an automatic, we tried the shift lever and still no reverse. we did have one code out of transmission which was 92 for #2 shift solonoid, but they all tested good. fluid was a bit burned and seemed to me a little sticky.

Only gear mine accurately indicates is P. Hell, when in OD the indicator is actually hidden between letters.

X2 on the fluid and filter, sure helped mine out.

when that happens with a C-6, it usually means it is time for a rebuild. the good news is that a C-6 rebuild is not that costly.
i got money that says the trans still has the same fluid and filter it was made with.
few people realize you should do a trans service every 35,000 miles. they feel if it works it is good.

x4-5... on the fluid and filter change.

I would recommend spending a bit more on some Red Line, RP, or other Synthetic ATF... Yes it will probably cost you double on the fluid but the bottom line is that synthetic fluids have higher detergency properties and will clean out your tranny of any "sticky" fluid better.

Update! still no joy, put new solonoids in and it still wants to go forward in nuetral and act like nuetral in reverse. next option since I can find none in local yards within 40 miles is to ask if my 1995 F-150 E40D will interchange with the 91 or not ? any clues
