Backlight on odometer

So a few weeks ago, my backlight on my odometer stopped working. At night I couldnt read it. So I brought it to the dealership figuring it was covered under my Ford extended warranty. It was and took just under 3 weeks to get the part. Well I dropped it of and 4.5 hrs later and $100 its done.
Here's the good part! According to invoice, my in mileage was 30125 and the new odometer dash read 28,500!, Suddenly my truck has 1600 less miles on it. This was confirmed using my maintance log, last entry was 29,500.

Somehow you should get a statement from the dealer stating the mileage change in case you ever decide to sell the truck there could be a mileage discrepancy.

I gues not, they replaced the whole cluster. Before too ling I plan on brinning it in for a tranny flush and fuel filter. I will talk to them about the discrepancy.

A dealership did this? And didn't give a written statement on the mileage? WOW!

If I were you, I try hard stay away from anywhere that would do work and record the miles till I ate up that 1600 free miles.

As long as I've had the truck since buying it new, I don't remember my odometer ever being lit up! I could never read it at night. Now you got me wondering...

Did they list what parts were replaced?

1600 mile difference... I wonder if they swapped the display cluster from another truck instead... I didn't think anyone could change the odometer since that's supposed to be tamper-proof.

The mileage is programmed into the cluster when it's ordered and cannot be changed by the dealer. However, they should have just replaced the burned out bulb.

@70f100longbed On my 05 Explorer, 93 E-150, 99 Miata, All of them I was able to remove the chip with the mileage and replace it with another. Would this not be the same?
