We didn't wreck anything, now he and everyone else has some reviews on Snap-on tools. Maybe they are about to buy a roll-away chest full of tools for their career, now they have a little food for thought. It was all good bro.

I did the spark plugs on my 2001 V10 over the weekend. I took my time and completed them using nothing more than a ladder, light, torque wrench, and a $70 socket set from Costco. I found no need for any fancy adapters, etc. Just a small variety of extensions! It takes a while, but really isn't too difficult. Thanks FTE community for the help.

Almost there

Hey gents, thanks for the great thread. I'm just about finished changing out the plugs on my 2002 Excursion. The rear two on the passenger side are giving me a bit of a fit, but only because I have a long extension. Heading into town to get a shorter one then should be good to go. It's all about have the right tools, eh? Cheers!

One plug different from others

Okay, I hit a major snag. Forgive for not knowing this, but when I removed the second to last plug on the passenger side towards the firewall, I noticed it is much bigger than the others. Hmmm... What do you make of this? I purchased the vehicle with about 140K on it so I don't know the history. Suggestions on what I should do next? Obviously the replacement plugs don't fit since the diameter size is larger. Do I get a larger diameter spark plug or is it time to take it into the shop?

Plug in question is far left.

it looks like to me that maybe 1 of the previous owner may have stripped the hole. so they went bigger (i guess i am no rocket genius) IMO

It looks like the timesert or helicoils came out with the plug so you will have to put something like a timesert back in there or maybe time for a new head.

Thanks for reviving this lively thread Ross; we haven't had a good controvesy on a thread in a while. Agree with Brent, somewhere in the past your V10 spit a plug.

Gents, thanks for your feedback.

I was able to change out the plugs but the engine still ran rough. So I took it to a mechanic and he said cylinder #4 is toast (no compression). I'm looking at a ~$3K price tag to fix it. He recommended I put in a rebuilt engine for $4-5K.

The body, undercarriage, and interior is in mint shape. If I sold it "as is" and cut my losses, how much would someone be willing to pay?

What to do?

Are you sure you dont have a bad coil? Those are a much more common failure than no compression! I would get a second opinion. What code do you have?
