Numberdummy, someone? Igniton part number

At one point 12 years ago, I bought the brand new Control Module for one of my trucks, problem is I don't remember which truck, and the part has gone unused because I didn't return it. I now have a 4x4 with a 351M and want to know if I can use it with this truck.

It was for either an 1977 351M (4x4 auto) or a 1977 460 (2wd auto), it is a gray square(4 or 5 inches on a side) with 6 wires coming out of it, divided into two plugs, one plug has 4 wires, one plug has 2 wires. Mounts to the inner fender by the hood hinge.

Label on the box says "AUTO XTRA - Ignition Part"
Numbers on the cardboard box are:

515-LX203
Product replaces:
SMP Echlin
LX203 TP40
Wells Delco
F102 F1910

Or are all of these modules interchangeable, are the firing orders the same for all the 70's engines and I'm worrying for nothing?

Digging through my parts boxes I came across another one! Same as above, a gray square. This one was used and I kept it for a spare, I either took it off a truck or the Granada I took an engine out of.

Just the part itself, says Motorcraft on it, has a label that says "Duraspark Ignition tested tough", and has numbers stamped into it: D8VE 12A199 A1C

It will work on any '76-'79...should be the blue grommet module.

EDIT: use the Motorcraft module (much more dependable) and save the other as your spare.

AFAIK, Ford never offered a module with a gray plastic square. And, this one isn't gray, according to the parts catalog, it's blue...has prolly faded to gray.

Marked: D6AE-12A199-A1A, or A1B, or A2A, or A2B / D8VE-12A199-A1B, or A2B, or A1C, or A2C > >

1U2Z-12A199-AA (replaced D9VZ-12A199-A, D8VZ-12A199-A & D6AZ-12A199-A) .. Blue Ignition Module (Motorcraft DY-893).

Used in all 1976 FoMoCo vehicles, then used in many FoMoCo 1977 thru the 1990's vehicles, maybe later.

Note: This module will not work on all 1977/79's ( I wish, see below), cuz there were two others with different wiring:

* D7AZ-12A199-A 'red' = 1977/79 many sold new in CA only vehicles. If not this module, the blue module was installed.

D9AZ-12A199-C (replaced D8AZ-12A199-A) 'brown' = 1978/79-Use w/high altitude carbs: I-6 & V8 E/F100/350 & myriad non CA I-4, I-6, V6 & V8 Passenger Cars.

* Here's a story, it's sad but true, about a red module I once knew, it went away and customers were p!ssed, because the little darlin's were a POS!

In 1978, this module was defective. 10's of 1000's of new and nearly new vehicles were parked on dealers service lots because it was on national (D99) backorder for three months!

Finally, some replacements began to trickle in, they weren't any better than the originals. It was another month before we finally received some that were any good.

In the meantime, I bought every used red module from 1977 vehicles I could find in SoCal junkyards to enable the customers to get their vehicles back.

It was a FIASCO!

I should have said "gray metal square with wires coming out from a blue strip of plastic in one corner" 4-5 inches on a side, 1 & 1/2 inches tall.

Thanks for all the good info guys!

Looking for help to find the correct ignition control module for the restoration of my 77 F100 Flareside, C6,2WD. I was told by National Parts Depot that I needed to know which was on the truck...problem is when I got the truck it had an aftermarket module on it and you guessed it, no number on it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

These modules are identified by the color of the plastic grommet that surrounds the wires where they come out of the module.
By far, the most common one is "blue". That's the one your truck should have.
Save yourself a lot of frustration and grief, spend the bucks and get a genuine Ford or Motorcraft piece. The cheap off shore parts are notorious for not lasting very long or being bad right out of the box.
The blue module is Ford p/n 1U2Z-12A199-AA. This number replaces older numbers D9VZ-12A199-A, D8VZ-12A199-A & D6AZ-12A199-A. Motorcraft p/n DY-893.

Thanks Mike. I've been 10 years this August restoring the truck to original. Having genuine Ford parts has been my focus and big reason for taking so long.

The aftermarket does have the blue grommet. I'll do some searching for the part number you sent.

Man! I wish they (and the other obsolete suppliers) would stop doing that . Listing aftermarket parts under NOS part numbers. They should at least note that the part is a replacement. I saw NOS had one but deffered to Green because they showed 36 in stock. Also, several Ford dealers have one, I know that they would have NOS genuine parts.
Glad you found a NOS unit, I'm a huge NOS parts fan myself. I'm on year five of my project.
Also, $53.00 is a really good price for it.

Same parts: 3 different locations, 4 different business names, listed on 3 different websites, using 3 different phone numbers!

800-816-2894 ~ Beaumont TX: Kinsel Lincoln (listed on FoMoCo Dealer Parts Locater System).

800-939-4190 ~ National City CA: Perry Ford (listed on same website as Kinsel).

888-727-0418 ~ Farmers Branch TX: NOS Parts Warehouse (listed on rearcounter.com) & Parts International (listed on PartsVoice.com).

Kinsel & Perry will only sell to dealers, the other two to anyone.
