5.4l to 400 (335 series) 4r100 bolt up?

2001 F350 4x4
Ok I am issues with the 5.4l and I got a good deal lined up on a built 400 but I am not sure if it will work with my transmission 4r100. bellhousing / torque converter, starter to flex plate alignment. I know I have to throw an stand alone for the transmission.

The engine wont bolt up to that trans, maybe there is an adapter but unless you have no other option it doesn't seem like a good swap IMO.

Not only tranny, but engine computer, and all the other electronics on a modern Superduty.

Then you have power steering, alternator, AC, you name it.

You COULD use an E4OD (with a computer for the 400) instead of the 4R100, that has the right bellhousing pattern (I think they do actually exist), but you'd still be up a creek on all the other stuff.

you would have an easier time dropping a V10 in that truck then going with a motor that hasnt been in a production vehicle since 1985. and for good reason haha

Not to mention the possibility of a direct impound by law enforcement, fish & game, USDA, or EPA at the local, state or federal level.

What are the issues with the 5.4? IMO with all you'd have to change to install the 400, a compete rebuild of the 5.4 would be easier. Maybe not less expensive, but paying the least for something doesn't always work out.

Yes...additionally it would be considered an illegal engine change since that specific engine was not offerred.....the best hope would be to go for an exemption at a federal referee station but that would be very, very unlikely and would be impounded at the facility as well!

OP is in Iowa. Best I can tell, there are no smog inspections in Iowa. Couldn't find anything on their DMV site and the private sites say no inspection.

SINCE WHEN is there any FEDERAL smog inspection as alluded to in the prior post?

SINCE WHEN are vehicles being impounded for failing smog? In CA, you simply can't renew your registration. If you try to import a non-approved vehicle into the US from a foreign country, you risk impoundment from the Feds--otherwise, it is up to the states to enforce the law. And that is almost alway via the registration process.

So, OP can put that 400 in there--which, imo, is a bad idea, but the smog check will be the least of his worries.

Any federal law enforcement officer can impound on a visual inspection...Fish & game wardens carry with them a book with pictures identifying all major vehicles (including hondas) to identify illegal engine changes & mods.
If impounded by epa, fish & game, USDA, any law enforcment (local, state, federal) or even a local/state/federal fire inspector can impound, you basically have no rights...you get to go to court, sit there while a judge decides if the vehicle will be scrapped or not and then, you get to sit and listen while the judge decides what all your fines, fees and assessments will be.....typically they start at about $3000

This isn't calif law, this is federal, that is enforced by states, counties or cities.

Do you have a link to any story or statistics relating to such impounds?

Those stats are reported at each state web site. or better yeat, place a call to your local fish & game warden....you would be amazed at the document they carry to enforce these regs......even has color pics to ID illegal engine swaps.

I'm not talking about what they "could do", "might do", or what YOU think they could do. Show me where such impounds are taking place simply because of an emissions violation.

I cannot say what your local would do...i have personnal had a local law inspect and sign off my exhaust system and weeks later recieved a written notice from an EPA inspector who observed my truck on the freeway......I have personally seen Fish & Game wardens issue citations and a good friend of mine almost 8 years ago now, had his vehicle impounded while off-roading in a national park (in an approved area)- in that case, he paid $3000 in fines/fees, was given 30 days to get the truck smog tested and passed and the truck had to be tested & inspected at a federal referee station- yeah, those are real easy to find! and the staff is sooooo helpfull too! oh, and he had to have the truck towed from the impound because it wasn't "legal' to drive.

This is not anything new, been going on for almost 20 years- enforcement levels are different varying by who is working the each area and how your luck is running!

OK, but it looks like you are usually subject to this kind of impound in connection with some other incident. An accident, or getting arrested street racing, for example--they always make a big scene out of those.

Anyway, I think the point has been made that this is not a good swap, up to the OP if he wants to chance it.

Thanks for the update.
