Power loss while towing

Ok, here's a new twist. I was taking my '06 6.0 SD for a shake down cruise today towing my 5000 lb travel trailer. I jumped onto the highway and hit the middle lane. I accelerated briskly smiling like a cheshire cat due to the spirited acceleration of this truck. I set cruise control at 65mph and it held steady..... even up hill. I jumped into the fast lane to pass a line of 18 wheelers, now this is where it gets interesting. Put your thinking caps on guys. I'm at 65 in the fast lane, cruise control on, and I put my foot into the skinny pedal to pass, over-riding the cruise.............i'm up to 3500 rpm and 70mph up a steep grade.........all of a sudden...the engine feels as if someone lopped off two cylinders. Felt like I left off the pedal. The boost gauge would not go over 12lbs, prior to this it was at 20. I was losing speed rapidly, It would hold 55mph ok, but not accelerate. The little "wrench" symbol on the dash illuminated indicating 'limp-home' mode. I immediately got off the next exit. The engine idled fine with no misfires or stumbling. All temps were fine (with stock gauges). I pulled over and popped open the hood. Everything looked and smelled fine. I shut her down, then re-started it. It fired right up and the limp-home mode indicator was gone. I jumped back onto the highway and tried to repeat the exact scenario without the cruise being on, and it pulled like a raped ape. No problems. I repeated this exercise three more times and was only able to duplicate the problem when I over-rode the cruise control by manually accelerating 3500rpm @ 70mph. I have not had the shop pull any codes yet, but was wondering what would cruise have to do with the "limp-home" situation? I'm supposed to go on a camping trip next week end and am getting very nervous.
Any help would be appreciated.

Both filters and air filter done within last 100 miles. That should not be an issue, but that's where I would have started too.
I can't afford to get stranded in the moutains of New Hampshire........nor North Carolina after that.

Are you sure you didn't over boost - just for an instant?

Air filter is new. No overboost. I got to 20lbs max during the excersises. This situation sucks since I'm a 6.0 newbie and feel that Ford is gonna use a full jar of KY on me.

what makes you think there will be any lube? LOL

I know that does not help, but I could not help myself.
I cannot add anything but I lurk and learn from Bismic, Cheezit and the others that so freely offer their knowledge.

Not sure if it means anything but I would see much more than 20psi boost under those conditions.

30 to 35 on mine in a situation like that. Pulling a 5th wheel on a hill accelerating at 3500 RPM. I was doing somthing similar a few months ago and my CAC tube blew off at the cooler. Thought I got shot! lol

Maybe something in the cruise control is not agreeing with the throttle pedal sensor, and only becomes a problem when the cruise control is on?

I remember reading that originally, the wrench light was FOR the throttle pedal sensor (don't remember the correct name), and if the three "positions" in it didn't agree, it would throw the wrench light and put it in limp mode.

There's been a couple of discussions about the throttle pedal assy lately. In a thread about a run-away, there's a reply with the voltages and discussion about it's operation. And earlier in the week (different thread) someone posted a schematic for the accelerator with a good discussion of how it works.
