transmission or torque converter failure

I had just got my truck back and was heading to work when the truck just seemed different,its always had a firm shift like the previous owner had a shift kit installed it,anyhow it seemed to wanna hold the shifts out longer,like i had to let off the gas for it to shift into overdrive,but there was never no shudder or tranny slippage.So I didnt think much of it until I was on the highway and my buddy says it felt like i had a wheel out of balance just a real bad vibration.To make a long story short I was leaving my buddies house that night and was beating on my truck pretty good,so the 1st to 2nd shift was real weird,it had a pause going to second almost like it was a manual transmission and i had let off the gas and pushed in the clutch.So i get down the road and decide to do a burnout so i get going and its taching like 4500 and I go to hit 2nd and the truck just bangs off the limiter like i missed a gear, it was still in second.I didnt hear any loud noise,no od light flashing and tried pulling codes but nothing.The weird thing is if i put it in forward or reverse the tach moves like its still in gear but the truck won't move.I'm leaning towards a shot converter,and input would be appreciated,and please I don't wanna hear any lectures about doing a burnout. The truck is a 97 f350 with a 460 and a e4od

The first test is, with engine off and transmission in PARK, see if you can push it forwards or back. If you can check(if it is 4x4) that the transfer case is fully in 2wd hi.

If it won`t move in Park then the transfer case and axle shafts are likely to be good.
I assume also that the fluid level is up to the mark? If so, I think I would drop the pan and check that the fluid filter has not fallen down.

the fluid looks brand new and is where it should.Is it possible that the pickup tube may have fell off or like you said the filter fell off?

start with the testing your TPS.
sounds like it is failing.

no lecture,but a little advice;
wait until you repair the trans back to normal before the burnouts.your wallet will thank you.

There is no sensor or other electronic problem that will prevent the trans from moving the truck either forwards or back.
The filter is the pickup tube so if it falls down fluid will not get to the pump.
I still think I would drop the pan and see if the filter has dropped into it and also check for debris (I know it is a PITA).

I'd have to agree with what Lazy K is saying. If that damn filter isn't right, then fluid won't pump and the transmission is a no go. it's a lot easier then paying for a transmission repair that would be unnecessary.
