What Size Air Cleaner and Filter Do I Need for Stock 351m?
I did a search but did not find my answer. I need to replace my worn stock air cleaner assembly. Can anyone tell me the base plate size of a stock 2bbl carb on a stock 351m? And do i need an offset, riser, or anything special to get one to fit? Is a 14 inch round by 2 or 3 inch tall size a common replacement? The summit parts search came back with a ton of options and i'm clueless.
Also,.......i'm not using an egr plate on the carb, so do i still need
That breather hose on the rear passenger side valve cover to lead into the air cleaner assembly? Or can I plug that valve cover hole? Or put a generic breather plug in that hole instead of a hose to the air cleaner?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

An 14" diameter by 2" or 3" tall open air cleaner and element will operate fine. However, a 3-inch tall filter "looks right" on the engine. 2bbl carbs and 4 bbls carbs have the same diameter top plate - 5-1/8 inches. Get a FORD-style air cleaner - It is flat on top. That's converse to GMs which have a slight dome or peak. Edlebrock air cleaners are also GM-styled.
You can get a very inexpensive air cleaner kit ($20 or so) from Mustangs Plus. It comes with a Ford blue base, a chrome lid, and a 2-inch tall paper element. Switch to a 3-inch tall K&N when the time comes. The base comes with a fitting for the driver's side breather if you want to use it. Otherwise, leave the lil rubber cap in place. The EGR draws escaped combusted gases from the crankcase and burns 'em. Good if you are subject to visual or sniff tests. If not, then open breathers are an option.
Me? I run a connected breather and PCV cuz getting clean air in and keeping particulates and crap out of the valve train (and oil!) is a good thing.

Yaaa. It fits. It's nice and big and looks great. The summit reuseable air filter looks sooo much like k&n's. I wonder if they are the same. Good call on the 3in instead of 2 in tall filter. The only left to do is get some hose and a filter to fit the pcv valve/breather to the base of this new cleaner base. FYI, i put a coat of wax on all the chrome before installing. Hopefully it won't rust for a long time.
Here's the worn stock unit. The aluminum was cracked in several places and the intake snorkel had just about fallen off so i took it off.
Here is the new summit cleaner and filter. (p/nsum-239431)

'glad it worked out for ya!
A "raised bottom" means that the air cleaner will hunker down over the carb more than a flat bottom air cleaner. A dropped bottom stands way up and off the carb. Flats and dropped bottoms are typically needed for clearance over nitrous solenoids and stuff like that.
My 70 came with an oil bath filter... my first experience with one. I didn't realize it was still an option in 1970! I've already replaced it with spares and take offs from the parts bin and have already noticed an increase in throttle response and overall power. I'm happily surprised to say the least.
