Question OT sort of Turbo350 trans problem

The reason it is "sort of" is that it is in my 50 F2. I need advice about a problem I am having.

In drive it shifts from 1st to 3rd. When shifted manually it works perfect..

I have no idea. If this is too far OT then PM me please.
thanks
jim

Had something similar happen to me with a TH350...the intermediate sprag had broken and I had to have the transmission rebuilt. The sprag is a weak link in the TH350. If you have it rebuilt you can have a heavy duty (hardened) sprag installed. I'm not a transmission guy...this is what the shop told me. I had that done and never had another problem with it. You can drive it like it is until you are ready to tear it down or until a piece of the sprag gets in the way...

PS If it is a broken sprag there will probably be metal fragments in the pan. There were in mine. I cleaned them out and drove it the rest of the summer and had the transmission rebuilt during the winter...

Thanks Vern, I appreciate it. Apparently you are the only one with knowledge on this...

Might be simpler just to find another trans.... Just not in the budget..

I was just unfortunate enough to have had the same thing happen to me. If you plan to keep the truck it would be better to find a way to rebuild the TH350. The same thing could happen again to another used tranny...

The good thing about Chevys is that there is a wide range of non-computer controlled transmissions out there you can use to replace the TH350 and they all bolt on. Any Powerglide, TH400 (requires a yoke change), 700-R4, or 200-4R will work. Though if you go the 700-R4 or 200-4R route you will have to get a detent cable.

Vern,
Some good thoughts there. I think the simplest thing for me right now is to check around a little bit and see if some people I know might have a good used trans laying around. Yeah I know some of those "other brand" people.

I am also thinking that down the road a ways when I blow this apart for body work I will probably put in a fresh motor and a 700R4 trans. It will be a lot easier with the sheet metal off. Also at the time I will install the final exhaust system too. I love my new exhaust I have now [see build thread] and I am going to use it as a prototype for the final version correcting some mis-calculations the PO made.
