2000 F150 Shift Linkage Cable

I've got a 2000 F150 5.4L 4x4. The shift linkage is real loose, I can't get it into park without rolling it in (bad on the tranny I know). My question is, how much, if any, can the shift linkage cable be tightened, or would a replacement be easier..
Thanks for the advice fellas.
