2002 dtc p0171, p0174

2002 4.0 4X4 Auto

Hey all sorry if I'm going over an old problem. I'm grateful for the help I got before I joined, saved me a lot of time and money.

Went for my state inspection and fail because of the CEL. Codes P1401, P0171 and P0174. Posts here led me to the DPFE sensor, after replaceing it (cleared out the 'puter' while I swapped out the part) truck even seemed to run better. I thought I was home free till the CEL came on after driving aout 40 miles. The 1401 code is gone but 0171 and 0174 are back. Only 3 days left in my "grace period" to fix it or risk driving and unispected vehicle.

I'm going out to check for vacuum leaks in a bit here. It's not a 1997 so the fuel rail to intake shouldn't be the problem right? I'm going to clean the MAF while I'm out there it should be cooled down enough by now. I'm not thinking too clear with the clock ticking like that. Maybe I should have focused on the truck instead fixing the furnace to keep the family warm (just kidding).

Have the same problem. Replaced fuel filter (now runs better), found pinhole in air intake (suggest may cause P0171 and P0174 fault codes), but not sure about fuel pressure, fuel pump... gonna measure fuel pressure next week.

well duh!

Sorry I should have waited till after I looked closer. On the passenger side of the engine along the valve cover are two hoses that run one above the other. The upper is a soft rubber type and the lower a slightly larger hard plastic. They do a 90degree right under the radiator hose... low and behold the elbow on the hard plastic hose has a GASH about 2" long in it. They both connect to the intake manifold so it seems a safe wager that there may be a small vacuum leak right there? (I have a nice pic but can't post attachments). Panic, fear, anger... they all make me pretty stupid and I feel pretty stupid right now. Back out in the cold to do a temp fix and see if the problem goes away... thanks for letting me ramble

Problem solved... got my new sticker and my truck seems happy. Had I spent an hour reading threads it would have been fixed a lot sooner. The rubber elbow that was on the vacuum line was a bit flimsy... I talked to the people at a local parts store we went and looked at some cooling system hoses and found one that was just right but needed a little trim... it'll take a buck knife and a hammer to put a gash in the "new" elbow.

Thank you to the many FTE posters with all this know how, I really needed at least one "easy out" about right now.

TY... you were prob the biggest contributer to the solution (the 1401 code first). I hope the other two here made out as well as me...

Same elbow was giving me trouble as well. Wrapped some electrical tape around it until i could get to the dealer on Monday for a new elbow (which BTW costs $17 for the hose and elbow) Pulled a boat 81 miles and no CEL! guess that was my problem. Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I'll get some pics up later tonight.

LOL... yup the electrical tape seemed a better choice than duct tape. Yours was the upper line? the flexible one? Mine was the lower one and from what I read on another thread it goes to the PCV valve... I'll have to confirm that tomorrow it's too cold right now.

A Boat ?! Ice out here won't be for a long time yet

OMG aint I a bright one... it was the vacuum line for the PCV valve and the line above it is the coolent line for the aluminum tube around the PCV valve, well no sense me being stupid if I aint gonna show everyone
