The earlier Mercurys had a lot of unique trim and different grilles, and in the case of the 48-50, the hood is different, too, but looks nearly identical and will physically interchange. By '51, the differences were limited to just a handful of bolt on nameplates and minor trim pieces.

I think the front fenders have holes in them for turn signals on the '48-50's.

Yes the front fenders for the'48-'50 Mercury has a spot for lights. It is a flat area put into the curve of the fender with a hole for the wiring and 2 smaller holes on either side for fastening the light on.
Also has the stainless strip held on in numerous spots along the fender. (Can't remember the hole total off hand.)

Hey Wayne I just read your reply. Didn't know there was a difference in the hood between Ford and Mercury. What is it??

Can't say I know 100% for sure. I've never had the two parts side by side. Looking through the Canadian truck parts catalog, which shows both Ford and Merc parts and numbers, the drawings are different and they have two separate and unique part numbers. The drawing thing could be attributed to laziness in the artist's part, but it depicts the louvre in the side different, and it doesn't show the body line stamped in above the stainless side trim. I did notice in the photos of the big M truck for sale that Chriscris has, it does have the traditional body line in the hood. I suppose the only difference could be the possibility the replacement Mercury hood was available with all the unique moulding holes pre-punched, and all else being the same

I'll admit to still learning about all this Ford/Mercury differences/same stuff, and not having any or all of the answers. The more I think I figure out, the less I find I actually know.

For the record, the book shows different part numbers for the front fenders, too. But not the lower aprons/extensions.

I've never had the two hoods side by side either. The holes would be a bit different for sure. I believe that would be the only difference?
The lower fender halfs are the same as far as I can tell. Thanks for the reply.
