My steering column is all floppy (tilt steering)

the column is so floppy that it moves 3 inches from side to side.
what really sucks is I can be turning and it moves the ignition enough to shut the engine off.

Is it moving at the tilt hinge or under the dash? If it's at the tilt hinge, you may have broken the casting and you'll need another column. Take the plastic shroud off & use an inspection mirror to check it out. If it's under the dash, you can get that bracket easily from a junkyard for a couple of bucks. The column would be $80-150.

What year truck is it? My '93 F250 had the same problem and it ended up being my steering shaft and top bearings. I had my column rebuilt with a new shaft and top and lower bearings. Final price was $240.00 but my tilt wheel has never felt better, tight as can be and really easy to turn.

Definitely in the pivot of the tilt mechanism. You may have shattered the casting around the pivot pins.
