After reviewing the comments in a previous post I decided to go ahead and proceed with a restoration thread. I am going to start off my giving a little history on the truck. My father purchased the truck from an uncle in late 1989, so technically it has been in the family since it was new. I have many great memories of going on vacation, family fishing trips, etc. in this truck. My father decide to try and restore in in roughly about 2001 and it has been a downhill battle ever since. Since the process started he has been diagnosed with COPD, high blood pressure, and a kidney disorder that will eventually land him on dialysis. I went to his house back before Christmas and picked up the truck to try and get it back together. I will start with a few photos of it's current state of disrepair.

 

looks like a fun project cant wait to see more.

 

Not too bad.. Where are you located, I feel like I've seen it somewhere.. Probably not but who knows.

Hi guys! Not much progress the last few days as I have been stripping the parts truck out so I can get it out of the yard. I will have a few miscellaneous parts available if anyone needs anything. My goal is to have all the parts I want to save off of it by tomorrow afternoon and have it at the scrap yard. After spending most of the day stripping the parts truck I can't decide whether or not to leave the stock 86 302 in place in my project truck or pull it out and drop in the 86 302 with Weiand intake, Quadrajet 4 bbl, and long tube headers. What do you guys think?

 

I think Qjunks belong on a cheby, but to each their own. I would personally go with a holley or a edelbrock. But that's just me.

 

The only reason the Qjunk is on there is because it was on the motor when I bought the truck.

This was the original concept that I wanted to achieve. I was going for a production look GT 500 F1.

but I guess I will just have to find a way to incorporate this scoop into the finished product. I think it would be cool if I could get the integrated turn signals installed.

 

That rendering looks bad a$$! I'm not much for a street truck, but that's nice..
And completely understable on the Qjunk.. Someone along the line decided they would patch the floor cancer in my 78 with bare aluminum plate! Over bare steel, what a bunch of idiots!!! I hate some PO's..

 

Thanks for the compliment. When I get an idea I grab a sketch pad and draw it out I actually have one where I placed a 53- 56 F1 grille insert into the outer 73- 77 grille shell.

 

That sounds pretty cool interesting thought.

 

Finally got a few hours today to tinker with the 76. I decided to tackle an issue that has been driving me nuts. For the life of me, no matter what adjustments I made I could not get the drivers side body lines to match on the fender and door and the gap between the cowl and fender was Fugly!


I decided to jerk the fender and inner fender off the truck and after a little measuring I discovered that the cab was 3/8ths of an inch lower on the driver's side than it was on the passenger side. I removed the bolt and placed a floor jack under the cab and applied enough pressure to lift the cab just enough to slide in a large diameter washer.

Of course I then noticed the loads of surface rust on the radiator support caused by the factory undercoating falling off.


I guess one thing always leads to another so I began stripping all the undercoating an rust off as well as preparing some off the cab and firewall for paint.

 

Also in your opinions which looks better on the inner fender the original Galvanized look or painted to match the body? My inner fenders are discolored and I used a scotch brite pad on part of one and it improved the look but I figure it will eventually oxide again. Here is what mine look like.

 

Any progress? Looks like a great project! If you decide not to use the scoop, I'll take it off your hands if the price is right .
