Hellow EB fans I have just replaced my blown 302 with a 351W from a 74 torino . I ran into some Crankcase pully problems. What should I do? The four bolt harmonic ballancer will obviously not take my old 302 three bolt 2 groove v belt pulley, and i do not want to change the harm bal, If possible. Also I am looking for an intake manifold for a four barrel carb for this same motor. Any suggestions as to what to get for the most low end tork. I have an edelbrock 650 carb for on it?
You can redrill the 3 bolt pulley to match the 4 bolt pattern. You may also be able to find a later model 4 bolt, dual groove pulley at a wrecking yard. Good luck. They are hard to find.
The best way is to swap the 302 balancer and Bronco pulleys onto the 351. Free and easy.
For low end power, you want a dual plane intake such as a Edelbrock Performer, or the Performer RPM. You may also consider doing a cam swap to an RV type cam.
Thanks Jason you wouldn't happen to know where I could pick up a used performer rpm or ed performer would you? You also said that the harm bal change was free and easy and i like that , but I was told that I would end up with a vibration due to them being specially ballanced for each motor. what would i do about that?
I haven't seen any manifolds for sale. I'll keep my eyes open.
The factory imbalance for the early 302 (before about 1983) and all of the 351W is 28 oz.
Now, if either engine has been re balanced on an overhaul, it could cause a vibration problem. But this problem would also show up if you used another 351W balancer. At that point, you would need to have the whole rotating assy re balanced to make it right anyways. At this point, I would install the 302 balancer and see how it feels. Chances are good that both engines have not been balanced.
thanks Momudder but Ive already got a new performer rpm mounted. I have been in the garage and havn't been paying too close attention to the comp screen lately. My loss. I changed the Harm balancer RCrawler Thanks cant wait to try it. Ive been hearing a lot of good feedback about the 351 as compared to the 302... I was mistaken on the year of the 351. It is actually out of a 76 torino Hopefully this won't matter. the alt looks as though it may line up ok But im still waiting on the power steering pump bracket from JBG.. Will i really need to change the oil pan if I have a 3 1/2 inch lift on the bronc.. If so who would you recommend getting the pan from JBG,,JD,,, ??
If it is a rear sump pan, and not too deep, you might be able to use it. This is all that the Bronco places sell. Also, you can get the same oil pans that they sell from Summit Racing for less than they sell it for. I have a part number at work if you want it.
My pan came from JBG. Good unit, infact its a oem ford piece and I've seen it in FRP catalog, too.
I have heard some express concerns about four wheelin' up steep hills might starve your oil pump due to the sump location on a front sump.
I wouldn't be real concerned with that possibility, though, if the pan fits.
Ok, here is the Summit/ Ford Motorsport # for the oil pan.
FMS M-6675-A58. This is a kit that comes with the pan, pickup tube, oil pump, and dipstick. It sells for $130. It is a rear sump, similar to the original Bronco pan (without the diff relief). It should work just fine with your lift kit. It will clear the driveline, no problem.
Why did you go with the Performer RPM instead of just the Performer? When I did the 460 in my F350 I went with the Edelbrock Cam Kit, the Performer intake, and a 750 cfm Edel. Carb. I got it out of Summit Racing Magazine. It's a matched set, supposedly, and performs very well for my good old workhorse. Was pretty easy on the checkbook too! The cam is supposed to be about like an RV cam.
