6.8 to 5.4

Has anyone done a 6.8 to a 5.4 swap? I wondering if I stay within the same year could it be as simple as a pcm, harness and engine? I can get a low miles 5.4 truck that is the same year as mine (2001). Any comments

I think you will need to add in motor mounts to that but yes you are right.

Why do you wanna go to a smaller engine? I have had buddys in the day say there is no mpg's to be gained, and people on this board pretty much agree. Also the cost to do the swap will probily be more then rebuilding your V10, and upgrading a few things too.

I am going to swap in a Crown Vic front suspension under my truck this summer, and I am debating going with a 4.6/5 speed combo too. I not worried about nickel and diming, but getting quatered becouse something is not as it seems.

I would do a couple of spread sheets to write down how much a conversion will really cost VS just rebuilding or re-placing your 6.8 V10. When you write down all the prices you may be surprised, and even if the 5.4 is cheaper you'll have to do more work then you may have considered.

Atleast if I do the 4.6/5 speed I will end up with great "for a truck" mileage in the end, and over a year will off-set all of the extra cost's I project.

It was just a thought. I have some engine noise and at 125,000 i was hoping for more life out of the engine than that. I could get the truck for next to nothing 1500.00. A tree was cut down by the city and they lost control of it and it fell on the truck crushing the the bed and the right half of the cab. The cheapest Ive seen a reman was 2900.00. a rebuild is a timething, i just dont want to tie the truck up for a couple of weeks while the machine work etc is done. Im thinking I can pull this off in two days with a little help. the only thing that scares me is the pcm issue. if it really plug and play it will work but if it turns into a no start it will be a major CF.

Thanks for the info

Buy the truck and part it out. I think you should be able to get $2500 out of it.

That way you'll have a $1000 roughly to offset you V10.

Also a CF can come from so many things these days with swapping. It by all means is do-able, but I would get a rental car for a couple of weeks. Or take a week off work so you can work through the project in order.
