hello, I have a 1992 F150 supercab shortbed 2WD truck. Im currently rebuilding this truck and have it pretty much torn down almost all the way, and now I am starting to get parts for it to begin putting it back together. I saw a thread on here about the 33 gallon bronco gas tank conversion and I understand it is possible to do, but I have a couple questions im hoping someone can answer.

1st. My truck is 2WD, most of the trucks i have seen the conversion on are 4WD. is height going to be a major issue here?

2nd. My truck was a fleetside and i have a flareside bed to put on it now, kinda the same as above but will the clearance between the bed and the frame be an issue?

3rd. I know there is a 25 gallon tank also, if height is an issue, would it work to install the 25 gallon tank instead?

sorry for all the questions, but these are some things I have been looking for an answer to and I dont want to buy something that i wont be able to use due to height to ground or bed clearance. thanks!

 

Bronco tanks hang very low. I was wanting to do it until I saw how low they hang.

I was also thinking about the 25 gallon rear. Haven't seen any pics of it.

dont really like how low that hangs... i wonder if there is any lowering done to that truck in the picture maybe? ( it has a roll pan, might be lowered.. atleast i hope lol ) if not then i know i wont be doing this conversion

 

Broncos have a skid plate over the tanks tho that isnt in that picture.

 

Yes its a lowered Lightning. Picture was just to give you an idea.

 

thanks for the reference atleast, i wasnt trying to say i didnt appreciate it lol, i was just thinking that maybe with it being lowered it might sit up a little higher off the ground as well as having the skid plate on it, im not to sure about doing this conversion now though, because even without my truck being lowered it might still sit pretty low to the ground...

 

i did the bronco tank on my wrecked f150 project... will never do it again. but mine doesnt hang as low as everyone elses because i had to cut an inch or so out of the bed support

 

Is there room on the side instead of the back? Would it still hang as low?

It is good weight distribution and for a lightning or any 2wd it would be pretty good all around I think as they don't worry as much about hitting debris. However if you treat your 2wd like a 4wd then no, this tank is not for you IMHO.

 

would it be a direct bolt in procedure or would i need to do some custom fabrication? my truck is not going to be going through any type of harsh environment once i am done with it, will have put to much into to it to even want to do anything like that with it, so its mainly highway use

 

you can use a skid plate out of an F series with extremely long bolts but it doesnt look too great. the bronco skid plate is too short.. the holes wont line up

 

i used universal tank straps from auto part store help section.Used original upper F series straps, never had to touch the bed. Hangs low, but bought truck with a 6" chrome drop bumper, the tanks not too noticeable, then theres the trailer hitch

 

i only had to because the bed was off when doing so and i had set up the bottom straps tighter which pushed the top of the tank up higher than the original location. (if that makes sense)

mines not 4x4, its a hauler so i'm not too concerned about how far its hanging
theres times when i'll have 3 or 4 ton in my bed
