Fuel pump problem for 1985 300 6cyl

OKay so here is my dilema: I was told that the fuel pump should be facing toward the bottom of the engine and on the lower side of the camshaft....like in picture #1...however I have turned the camshaft so many times (arms are tired) and it just doesnt fit it seems more logical (to me) that it should be facing upward like in photo #2 and on the top of the cam....that's really the only way it will go on. Am I doing something wrong or just not getting it?
