slave cylinder removal

im gonna do my clutch tomorow. what exactly do i need to remove the line from the clutch slave cylinder? is it similar to the removal tool for the fuel filters? also, do i have to remove the line before i drop the tranny? this seems to be the only thing confusing me. -thanks

If my mind serves me right, I think I read that you need those plastic line connectors, and that is all. Not 100% sure, but I think I read it in an article here somewhere. Sorry, no links. (couldn't find it again)

if it is an external slave cylinder you dont need to remove the line at all. just slide the whole cylinder off the bracket and hang it out of the way

I thought all the 92-96 F-series had internal slave cylinders on the m5od? Am I wrong about that?

Ill trade ya my m5od for your ZF, straight across

Also, I am assuming that we are talking about the truck in the OP's sig. If so, I believe that it has the m5od.

let me know how it turns out. Also if you come across any tips or tricks, I could probably use them. The way I am with my clutch, it is going to need replaced within the next few months..

okay. ill probably take some pics too. i always take pictures when i do something for the first time so that i know how everything looked when it was still together. ive never dropped a manual tranny, but it looks a whole lot easier than an automatic. what should i be asking for at autozone to remove the slave cyl line? a fuel filter removal tool? i like autozone bc they will rent you the tool for free (if you bring it back, of course)

Those connectors suck to get apart. I would take a picture of it when you go rent the tool.

Not 100% sure what the tool is called. I would just explain the situation to them. If the person you talk to knows anything about his job, he should know exactly what your talking about.

The tool inquestion is, IIRC is simply called a Hyraulic clutch hose removal tool.....Its a cheap lil piece of chinese ingenuity.....Its basically a thin piece of metal, similar to a bank card in thickness...It has a C notch in one end....

i did my clutch yesterday. it took me literally 9 hours straight. sorry no pics, but i do have a few tips;
-get a hold of a transmission jack. it will save you alot of time. i had one and it was still miserable trying to get the input shaft to line up into the hole of the flywheel/motor.
-as for the slave cylinder, i bought the little plastic things to remove the line, but they didnt work at all. i ended up taking a hammer and a screwdriver and bashing up the slave cylinder until the line came out. if you put in a new slave (which you should anyway) then i wouldnt be surprised if you also end up freaking out and smashing the old cylinder to remove the line.
-putting the clutch on was a peice of cake. my flywheel looked good so i didnt have it resurfaced. most clutch manufacturers will reccomend that you resurface it.
-having an air impact wratchet was also a huge help. get yourself one. i regret not having one in the past.
-the crossmember was sort of tough to get off too. the bolts are hard to get to and your gonna destroy your knuckles trying to get it off. the tranny wont come out unless you remove the crossmember. (i tried)
-on my truck, the drive shaft required a 12 point socket to be removed from the ham. its 4 bolts
- drain the tranny before you remove it. i made the mistake of leaving the fluid in and i was covered by the time i dropped the tranny.
- to get the input shaft lined up to slide it back into the motor, i slid the drive shaft in and had somebody wiggle the drive shaft while i pushed the tranny towards the motor until it lined up and went in. the tranny has to be in gear for this to work.
- dont forget to bleed the system when your done. its easy to bleed. the bleeder is right above where the slave cyl line goes in, and you bleed it just like brakes.
