I have had 6 cyl in both dodges and F-150 and have no issues. Reasonable gas mileage used it as a daily commuter and hauling the odd load of dirt etc. Had one for 17 years.
When I purchased a 25 and then a 29 ft trailer and started camping I had to step up to the 5.4 in order to pull. It comes down to what you need the truck for.

As for 4*4; it is the same; It depends on your needs and wants. I now have a one and would not do without. I live in western Canada and we get snow. I am on the road at 0430 before the plows and it is a nice insurance to have. Its like anything; if you have it you can use it; if you don't there are time you wished you did. Some years I have rarely used it but its a good option.

Maybe I'm a little more adventurous than some but my 4x4 has saved my butt many times already and I've not had it a year yet or been through an Alaskan winter. And I do not go out looking for mud. A couple situations that come to mind was towing 8klbs to Alaska, there was a couple pullovers that were gravel. HAD to put it in 4wd to get up the hill and back onto the road. Sure, I might have been able to back way up and get a huge running start and make it up unsafe slinging out into the road. There have also been a couple back roads in Alaska I've been down that looked great but turned terrible before you could notice, was just really slick mud on the surface was not deep.

Also my 5.0 was taxed severely pulling 8k lbs. So I could not even imagine trying to tow 5k with a 3.7 comfortably up some of the hills I've been on. Not knocking the 3.7 at all. Just defending my 5.0 4x4 from some of the comments that seem to say the big engines and 4x4 are just for people to buy to say they have it.

i tow 5400lbs of trailer, race car and gear a few times a month without any problems with a 3.7. i would say its very comfortable and even going up hills its very good, you will just see 4th gear maintaining the 55mph speed limit for trailers in california.

i however, wouldn't want to regularly tow 6k+ with it. i pretty much tow what its intended to tow and thats a very good baseline rating for it.
