speedo drive gear choices for BW1345?

Hey guys. 84' F250, T19, BW1345. Looking for the correct speedo drive gear.

Currently have pink driven gear, 19 teeth. BW1345 had a green drive gear, 7 tooth, totally stripped out. (Not sure if they are L/H or R/H - what is the orientation point to look from?) Rear axle is Dana 70, 3.54 ratio. Tires are 235/85R16. This helped a little;

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...which-one.html

I got E7TZ-17285-A from local dealer as a trial.. Yellow gear. It is too small in diameter to fit on the collar that slips over the output shaft. But holding it up to driven gear, it kinda looks like it would mesh ok.. I also saw

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/3...x4-speedo.html

Dealer had a 'B' part number version - E7TZ-17285-B. Yellow. Dealer also had E3ZZ-17285-AA. Brown. None of these 3 possibilities are large enough inside diameter to fit over the collar. Whatever gear is the right one would have to be at least 1-5/8" inside diameter.

I don't mind changing speedo driven gear, or even the whole cable.. But there's no point putting it back together with the wrong pair of gears. Drivetrain.com lists 3 different ones, specifically for the BW1345.

1345 Transfer Case Borg Warner Parts Illustration and parts list! - Drivetrain.com

Assuming these are the correct inside diameter, (not a given, I'm waiting for feedback from them) which one has proper number of teeth & pitch for a pink, 19 tooth driven gear? Any help is appreciated.

Update; spoke to guy @ Drivetrain.com. They can get a green drive gear - but they can't tell if it is a correct match to the pink driven gear. They also cannot tell if green drive gear is what should be there, and are pointing me back to Ford dealer. Who could not help to begin with.. Re-assembly is stalled at the moment, so any suggestions would really help me out. Thanks in advance.

The parts catalog is telling me the BW 1345 was available:

80/86 F350
87/89 F150/350

My catalog goes only til 1989 but I'll bet this is why people in the retail channels are having
problems looking this up in books.

So, looking some more, this is a pain in the *** - pages & pages of stuff.

You're looking for the drive gear in the transfer case, correct?

And you have one now, correct?

Can you give me the identification number on it? Something like E0TR 17285-BA or whatever?

Give me all identifying numbers from both gears you can find. Also:

Your axle ratio
Number of teeth
Tire size
Physical shape (pictures are great, both side & end views)

Maybe I can get ND to help....

Hey Ctubutis, thanks very much for the help. Yep, I'm learning how much of a pain in the *** it is.

Yes, I need the plastic speedo drive gear found inside the BW1345 transfer case.

Yes, I have one, but it is ruined. Stripped out, no more teeth to mesh with driven gear. Speedo has never worked, this is how I found it.

Speedo cable end - pink driven gear, 19 teeth.
BW1345 - green drive gear, 7 tooth.
Rear axle - 3.54 ratio, Dana 70.
Tires are 235/85R16.

No identifying numbers or marks on green drive gear, or pink driven gear.

Green drive gear measures 3/4" wide. 1-13/16" outside diameter. 1-5/8" inside diameter. Obviously a press fit on the knurled collar.

Pic of my green gear, the collar it rides on, and the incorrect E7TZ-17285-A, which is too small inside diameter to fit over the collar.

Gear is stripped.

Pic showing the fit between drive gear and driven gear. If it had teeth, green drive gear might be close to mesh with pink driven gear, but hard to tell. My guess is pitch or # of teeth is wrong, since it is so stripped.

The biggest challenge is I'm not sure what gear is supposed to be there. It's not just a simple matter of finding a part.. It's finding the correct part. I suspect the green gear was the wrong one to begin with, since it is so stripped out. But I have no way to reference what should be there.. Thanks again for helping with this pain in the ***..

Just missed your post of the chart while I was posting pics. Curious, it appears for 1984, all the F250's are showing NP208. <sigh> Which is not what I have.. %&^$#-franken-truck..

But do I read that correct?
Model year 81/82, F250 with 3.54:1 axle ratio has the BW1345?
PN# E1TA-7A195-DB ??

I'd need to confirm this with some information in the corresponding Illustration manual but
that seems correct as far as I remember (I'm at work right now).

I asked Bill (NumberDummy) if he can help, he's been doing this for decades and is
much faster & better at it than I am + he's retired and has a lot of time.

</sigh>

(sigh) All this rigamarole to find a simple drive gear, which btw, has SIX teeth, not seven.

This has to do with the method the number of teeth are counted. I only count six and there's only one green drive gear listed.

This is one a the easiest parts to look up in the catalog, cuz if you go to Text, Section 172, Page 5 all the types of DRIVE gears are shown and which way the teeth run (\\\ or ///).

On page 6 the ID & part numbers are listed as are the colors, number of teeth.

So, if you have the original drive gear, you don't need applications or need to spend hours lookin' thru myriad parts lists tryin' to figure out by: tire sizes, axle ratios, trans types, series of trucks, 2WD vs 4WD what the he!! fits what.

DOTZ-17285-A .. Speedometer DRIVE Gear / Green / 6 teeth (run this-away \\\) / Marked: WAJ-17285-A / Available from Ford.

Fits: Myriad 2WD & 4WD 1970 and later F100/350's, & F(Super Duty) / 1970/96 Bronco / 1970/74 E300 / 1975 and later E100/350's & E(Super Duty) / Also fit some 500 and larger series trucks.

MSRP: $55.60 // FTE Ford Dealer Parts Dept sponsor PARTSGUYED.COM price: $40.03 / PartsGuyEd = Ed Olson, parts manager of Horizon Ford in Seattle WA

It took a lot more time to type this jazz, than the seconds it took to find the puppy.

Hey Bill....is the catalog you're referring to the one available from the HiPo parts garage? If not, what is it that you're using?

I'm using the 1980/89 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog on FoMoCo microfiche slides, but...

This same catalog is available on a CD from hipoparts.com @ $21.95.

Hipo has it listed for F100/500's....but someone goofed w/the description, cuz there's no F500's listed, just F100/350's, F(Super Duty) and this catalog includes Bronco/Econoline/Ranger/Bronco II & Aerostar parts.

Another 1980/89 catalog is available for HEAVY trucks.

If you're near Glendale AZ, Don Sanderson Ford has 2, but I doubt you'll be able to buy it for 40 bucks,

How do we know this is the correct gear to match up with his pink, 19-tooth DRIVEN gear?
