Hey, new to the site but wanted to see if anyone had some advise on what i should do. heres the problem: just bought my o4 FX4 5.4 liter. when i test drove it i heard the ticking noise but knew it was sometimes normal for these trucks so i paid it no attention. like others iv heard from, as soon as they changed oil the ticking noise got louder but in the last week it has randomly stalled twice at very low speeds trying to find a parking spot. the engine pretty much sounds like a deisel now and im wondering if the ticking noise and the stalling is related. If you have any advise let me know. thanks.

 

I would think the stalling is maybe a dirty throttle body, maf sensor, or fuel filter. The ticking is most probable the cam phasers.

 

One other thing, make sure to use 5-20 oil and a good antidrainback filter ie 820s motorcraft. Oh, btw the throttle body can and is easy to clean.

 

I have the same problem. bout my 04 5.4 fx4 used. dealership told me it was a knocking cam journal and wanted 7800 bucks to fix it. They said if i didnt get it fixed that the entire engine would be gone in about 10-15000 miles. A friend of mine told me just to simply change the oil and use a heavier weight. After some research I went with a 6 quart full synthetic 10w-30 and 1 quart Lucas synthetic oil stabalizer combo to = the 7 quarts of oil needed. It all but eliminates the knock for about 3500 miles. the you will start to be able to hear it again. Its how my dad knows when im over do an oil change. Anyways that was 4.5 years and 55,000 miles ago and it still runs great.
