R & R heater core with pics

I did a search on this and didnt find very much info on R&R of the heater core, mine was leaking and I replaced it this afternoon. I can say that this is a pretty easy job that would have taken 1/2 hour if it wasent for those stupid "quick connectors" on the heater hoses. I'd like to slap the **** outta some Ford engineer for the invention of those dam things.

First save yourself alot of headache and time, CUT THE HEATER HOSES RIGHT NEXT TO THE "QUICK CONNECTORS".

These are the "quick conectors" they suck a$$ just cut them off!!!

I took the long route and cut the ends off of the old heater core next to the firewall with a hack saw blade trying to save these POS fittings beacuse i could not for the life of me get them off.

don't waste your time! just cut the hose right behind the fittings and pull them through the firewall with the heater core when you remove it.

Pic of the heater core housing behind glove box:

remove 8- 5/16 screws that hold the cover on and the 1 screw that holds the blend door motor actuator at the top left of the heater core housing.

next remove plastic cover and blend door actuator, lift up on blend door motor and turn counter clockwise while pulling up, I found it helpful to have the temp **** in the coldest position while doing this and while reinstalling it, the door will be in the open position and it is easier to align the shaft into the door hole in the cold position and open rater than trying to keep the door closed while installing the blend door motor.

Heater core removed, New heater core in place

Reinstall heater core cover and blend door motor

push heater core hoses over the ends of the new heater core and install 2 new USA made stainless steel hose clamps

you are done! if you dont take the time to Fu@k with those stupid a$$ connectors that ford puts on there this will take you all of 1/2 hour to do..

do it the way i did and try to save those fittings and break them while trying to install them back on the new heater core and it will take you 3 hours, lots and lots of cussing and a 12 pack of your favorite beer!

here is a pic of where my heater core was leaking... steaming up my winshield and smelling like ***** in the cab.

Cheers!!!

Nice write-up. Good to know that the heater core is not hard to replace. My friend with a 99 F150 (not positive on the year) had it done by firestone and they had to rip most of the dash apart. I think it was around $800 for them to do it. It would probably be 2x that now with the US dollar on the decline.

Nice write up. If this ever happens to my truck I will screw with the fittings for a little and if they come off easy ok if not I know now to just cut them off. I dont plan on buying the tool for this since it would probaly only be used 1 time.
Thanks

I had to do my sister's '98 f150, the entire dash has to come off. It winds up sitting in the seat while you work on the core. Though all she paid was 100 dollars for the core and a few beers for me.
