Trans leak 99F150 4x4 160k miles
I did a search and did not really find the answer. But some ideas. I drove 430 miles Saturday towing a trailer and two atv's. Mostly interstate. When I unloaded the trailer Sunday there was trans fluid all over the trailer and the tailgate of the truck and the underside of the truck. I noticed the fluid started toward the back of the trans and is wet even on top of the trans. There is a vent tube laying on top of the trans that comes from the transfer case. Could the transfer case vent be letting fluid out. If so how and is this fixable or is the trans producing to much pressure and blowing fluid out the rear seal. Remember ther is fluid on top of the trans, could be some weird air current I guess. The trans is low but not much maybe a pint or so.
Thanks

You should be able to tell if the t/c or any of the clutchs are slipping. You tow with OD disabled right? if not, you should as this produces alot of heat at the OD band engaged and disengaged, as well as the t/c unlocking and relocking.
With OD disengaged and in third gear, as you accelerate and roll off the throttle to maintain speed around 70MPH, you should see the rpms drop a few hundred, indicating the t/c has locked up. if you slowly roll on the throttle the rpms should jump a few hundred. If it never locks up then it will get hot. I have a thermal couple on my fuild output tube to the radiator and then the t/c is unlocked and I'm climing a hill the temp will rise pretty quick. I get off of the throttle and let the t/c relock at around 200C.
Take it with a grain of salt, as my tranny is being rebuilt right now at 130k.

I know I should not but I was towing in OD. My load was probably 1500 to 2000 lbs. Light weight trailer to quads and gear . Wind resistance was probably the biggest load.
I added fluid back tonight almost a quart. Brought it just above the add mark on the dip stick after idling to get the temp up and shifting the trans thru the gears. Just have to wait and see how it works out.
