2 Different parking brake cables? Pictures

Hey all,

I'm doing a brake job next week (rear bearings, drums, hardware, cylinders, lines, the whole nine yards) and I was looking at my non-working parking brake assembly and noticed this.

Parking brake NOT on:

Parking brake on and all the way to the floor:

Does it look like I have 2 different parking brake cables on there? Or are they just 30+ years out of adjustment? Should the equalizer bar be perpendicular to the driveshaft/frame?

The secondary cables are probably rusted, binding. One is not retracting fully. Perhaps sticking in the cable or in the brake retract mechanism. A good cleaning may free it up. With the brake assembly apart at the wheels you can pull and push the cable and it may free up. If they don't free up, replace them.

They are not the same ,i just put two new ones on my 79 f-100 yesterday. Along with all new brakes ,hardware and drums. I noticed that to and called in and ask them to check the numbers again , one is longer than the other one and calls for a different number. The old ones i removed were a short and long one. jim

On the bright side the underneath of your bed is sparkling clean. Those rear cables are also available in stainless.

D8TZ-2A635-C .. R/Rear Parking Brake Cable / Obsolete

D8TZ-2A635-D .. L/Rear Parking Brake Cable / Obsolete

Fits: 1978/79 F250 4WD / 1979 F350 4WD.

I found a coupla of each NOS in case anyone's interested.

jim collins: Since the OP has a 1978 F250 w/4WD, you cannot assume that an F100 will be the same inre to R/L specific cables.

While many rear parking brake cables are R/L specific, some are not, as it all depends on the application.

Mark that "sparkle" is WD-40. It's my low $ rustproofing

Bill or Mark do you happen to know the length of those cables? I found some at NAPA and I'm wondering if they're the right length for my truck.

Left Rear...#UP93203...Cable Length: 69.5"...Protective Housing Length: 45"
Left Rear...#UP93200...Cable Length: 65.5"...Protective Housing Length: 45.25"
Right Rear...#UP93199...Cable Length: 58"...Protective Housing Length: 37.63"
Right Rear...#UP93204...Cable Length: 62"...Protective Housing Length: 37.75"

If I had known, I would have posted the lengths after the part numbers, but the parts catalog doesn't give the specs.

I measured from the outside of the drum to the ball end up in the frame so I was unable to get the overall length. It was roughly 65 inches and they are the same length.Huh.

Anyway, you could look up your truck on Inline Tube's website get a part number and call them for a length. I'm sure they would give you that info so you get the right parts.

No problem Bill!

And thanks Mark! I'll give them a call!

EDIT: I went to Inline Tube's website and there was no listing for any Ford trucks that I found

Alright, so I finally got my adobe acrobat thing to work. Now that I see the catalog, there is no '78 applications at all. There is a '79 F250 4x4 listing and ND said that they are the same part #, so I'll call them tomorrow.
