Fuel Tank and Pump Question

Fuel Tank and Pump Question
I've been lurking a while and finally joined so I could try to get a couple questions answered. My owners manual and Chilton manual aren't detail informative.
I've got a 1993 F-150 Regular Cab, 4x2 SWB. Front and rear fuel tanks.
How many fuel pumps does the truck have? I know there is one in the front tank. Is there a fuel pump in the rear tank?
Is the transfer of fuel from the rear to front tank by gravity? Is the selector switch only to display the tank level? Or does it have some function in the fuel transfer?
Thanks. Dan

Two.
Yes
No, you do not transfer fuel if the valves in the tanks are working right.
No.
It also sends power to the selected tanks fuel pump.

just one filter under drivers side door inside the frame rail. careful of the plastic clips that hold it on. you will most likley break them just go get backups at oreilly or autozone for 2-3$ before you replace the filter. always nice to have them I keep a set in my glove box lol.

To remove the Injector filter you need a special tool as you will not have the plastic keepers like the older trucks had to hold on the fuel lines.
Fuel pump, valves and fuel pump filter/strainer/screen:
What holds the fuel lines on the Injector filter, the tool to remove them and the keeper inside:

I bought this truck 6 years ago and have only put 5,000 miles on it. It currently has 128,900 miles. The truck is stock. No aftermarket changes. It's used to run to Lowes, Home Depot, garden nursery, loan to friends when they need a truck, etc.
After buying the truck I filled the rear tank but it seemed the rear tank drained into the front tank keeping the front tank full. I didn't use the truck enough to keep fresh fuel in the front and rear tanks so I quit filling the rear tank.
About 2 years ago, the gas gauge started working intermittently and then quit altogether. It reads about 1/8 tank with the key off and drops to empty with the key on. Any suggestions.
Recently I was driving the truck and it just quit. I pulled over and it restarted and I drove it home. The next time I went to use it, it would start, run terrible, check engine light on, quit, and do the same over again. I bought a code reader and the engine started and ran fine but no fault codes.
I started listening for the fuel pump when I turned on the key. Most of the time the pump would turn on for a couple seconds and then click off and the engine would start. Other times, the pump would contine to run and the engine wouldn't start. If I squirted some starting fluid in the air intake, it would run on the starting fluid. I suspected a clogged fuel filter was sometimes keeping the system from pressurizing the system. I changed the fuel filter. Blowing through the old filter took more pressure than the new filter. The engine started and ran better than ever. I used it on 2 different days for about 20 miles with no problems. I thought the problem was fixed. The next time I went to start it, same problem The fuel pump continued to run and the truck wouldn't start.
Searching this forum, the problem kind of pointed to the EEC starting to fail. I pulled and opened the EEC and didn't smell any burning or see any problems.
Any suggestions.
This morning, the front pump operated normally. I tried switching to the rear tank and the rear fuel pump did turn on and then click off after a couple seconds. I didn't try starting it on the rear tank since it's probably empty. Is it ok to use only the front tank?
Thanks. Dan

You have bad valves in the front tank but you can use it. Sounds like the pump in the back tank is a good unit. The filling tank always has the bad unit in it.
And yes the computer is on the way out as the caps are going bad in it. You can replace the caps or get another computer from a salvage yard. Or of course you can get one from an auto parts store or ebay also. Ford does not sell them any more for out era trucks.

Really? that is awful. NAPA USED to carry Standard Motor Products rebuilt ECMs. I am deeply saddened.
Here is a link to the Standard Products web site: Standard - eCatalog
You should be able to cross reference which 'puter you need. I also checked Rock Auto's website, they carry brand X as well as Standard Motor Products.
Do what you want, but I am not a fan of Cardone "rebuilt" anything, especially their electronics.
