I installed my 99-04 superduty springs today. 8" BDS springs with 5.75 shackles as discussed in the forums here. The drive line angles are perfect and they fit well. My problem is the axle is off center anyone else have experience with this? Tires are 42" TSL's.

 

Turn them around? The stock springs on a highboy or a 78/79 both have the axle forward of center on the springs. My guess would be the superduty's would be the same.

I think if I turn them the drive shaft angle will go astray. the front driveshaft and the dicorced shat are perfect right now as is. I think the cut out flares make it worse as well.

 

I think I will swap them and get some degree wedges for the angle. It looks silly.

 

from those who have done this swap, which end of the spring is the front? the longer end or the shorter end?

 

Im not sure, i know when i swapped in stock SD springs in my truck they did move my axle back around 1". Although on my truck its less noticable. the SD are 1" longer as well, i dont think its as noticable on mine since i need bigger tires, so you cant really tell how off it is in the wheel well. Or maybe its just not as far off as on yours.

 

Do you think the length of the shackles has to do anything with it? Not sure what length most guys are using with this swap...

 

even if you think it looks funny you can always drill a new hole in the main leaf {only} and adjust it.

 

What do you mean by this? Move the pin on the main bottom leaf to relocate the axle? I wouldnt think you could move it very much by doing that. The dilema for me is that all the angles worked out so well Im hesitant to change much. just want it to look right.

Can you guys shed some light on the drilling of the main leaf idea, pros, cons do's and donts?

If you look at the pic I cant really turn the springs around because of the way their built it would substantially tip my axle upward.

 

I didn't use SD springs but if I remember right the short side went towards the front. It sure looks like they are in backwards. I wouldn't try drilling them, to me that sounds like a silly idea. Spring steel is not real fun to drill. I would double check and experiment with what you have.

 

If you want I can measure my springs and double check the short/long side.

 

yea, but you cant do that. the second leaf is too close to the eye ........ what kind springs are they atlas?

 

Read a bit about it and you guys are right I will not be re drilling any springs. And the secong leaf is to close to the eye as well.

No not atlas they are BDS 8".

If you wouldnt mind measuring yours to see id sure appreciate it. I may have them in backwards.

 

Just went out and checked the short side goes front.
