When I got my truck she averaged 12mpg hwy. I have put in an aluminum radiator, dual electric fans on a shroud, MSD distributor cap & rotor, MSD Street Fire coil, Ford Racing plug wires, E3 spark plugs, and a K&N drop in filter. I ran all 3 stages of seafoam, intake, vacuum, and gas, before I did any work. I also replaced the A/C compressor, water pump, and fuel filter. Recently I upgraded the Ujoints and replaced the carrier bearing. All this with Mobil1 oil and yearly PCV changes gets me about 20mpg. I have not confirmed this yet with hard numbers, but I do have a 400 mile run coming up.
To get more MPG I plan to install an electric water pump, electric locking rear differential, torque converter lockup switch, shift kit, and exhaust from the headers back. I plan to make my own intake.
I have dumped around $3,000 to gain 8 mpg. That is a 60% increase in mpg. Not bad in my book, and I had allot of fun doing the work.

I filled up today and paid $3.89/Gal. Checked my MPG and averaged 17.4 for this tank, but it's 99% highway cruise @ 60-65 MPH. I think I can squeeze some more out if I take out the 180* t-stat and go back to a 195*. I also want to convert to electric fans, add a MSD box and remove the cat (which may end up hurting my MPG). Truck is a '97 F250 5.8/E4OD/3.55s/P255-70R16s.
My '93 Festiva (1.3L/5sp) averages 45-48 MPG if I keep it around 60MPH. I don't even think the Smartfortwo does that well (?). Funny how everyone makes fun of my Festy at first, asks what kind of mileage it gets, and then tries to buy it from me. Their perspectives change instantly when they get all the details, kinda like finding out the fat girl at the end of the bar won the lottery! I saw a beat-up, rusted out & trashed Festiva that ran like crap but didn't smoke sell for almost $900 at an auction a few weeks ago.

I am getting around 14 mpg out of the 95 in my sig. 4 inch lift on 33" duratracs. 4.9l with a 5 speed and 3.55 gears. I drive about 40% city, 60% gravel. My truck rarely sees overdrive. I shift at 2500 rpm, and cruise right at 1650 rpm. Couldn't be happier with a lifted truck that gets 14 mpg! Also, my truck is in need of a tuneup, desperately, but she keeps runnin' just fine, so I haven't got around to it yet.

For all of us 300 owners, a simple restriction plate on the EGR valve works wonders. It clears up the horrible jerking that the 300's are known for at cruising speeds. Enough exhaust gas gets through to do it's job, without the egr valve screwing up the mixture. a smoother running motor means more efficient

Anything that increases performance without requiring more fuel will result in more MPG, if you can keep your foot out of it.

My '97 5.4 Expedition gets 13~15 mpg all the time, no matter what--I'm in the process of tricking the computer into thinking the air temp is always 90 degrees outside, which thins out the mixture and helps economy.
My 2000 F350 7.3D gets around 15~17 mpg in temps cooler than 70, and consistently get 19~21 on highway trips NOT exceeding the posted 55 in the warmer temps. Interstate trips even at 90 degrees fall down to 17mpg. I'm attempting to achieve the same results by tricking the computer into thinking it's 90 degrees all the time, with a switch on the dash for cold starts. The tranny is getting worn out on the diesel, and I feel much of my economy loss is from the sloppy torque converter. Gently give it throttle and it sits at 1100 until you gain speed, but put the pedal down and it easily goes up to around 1800--that's way too much rpm movement for such a big, torquey, strong engine. My Expedition's converter doesn't allow such a wide rpm range until the clutch engages. I just don't have the funds to rebuild the tranny just yet. Anyway...
The only engines I've heard people EASILY getting economy from are the newer 5.4 Tritons from 2004? on up (300HP, 3 valve versions). 18 is typical and 20 isn't unheard of. Can't wait to upgrade our Expo, but we LOVE the ride in the old girl! (and it's been paid for, for many years now)

I've had my F150 parked, mostly using my '06 Ranger. I've driven the F150 like 300 miles in the 8 months I've owned it. I'd guess it gets around 15 MPG?
My '06 Ranger is consistently getting 27 mpg, driving 400 or so miles/week all highway. Still expensive! A cheap, good on gas car, will only pay for itself if you drive 12,000-15,000 miles a year or more, which I'm doing
My '91 Chevy 1500, when I owned it, knocked down a best of 23 MPG all highway (driving 65-70) and consistently got 20 MPG with 80% highway driving. It was a 2wd, automatic, 4.3 v6 TBI truck. My 300 powered F150 is definitly a better "truck" although MPG is worse...I love my F150

I filled up yesterday @ $3.65/gal $80.20ttl. I have been running off one tank lately just to see what mileage I get but decided to fill both & get a longer term avg.
Bought the truck in the middle of the week, went the rest of that week & the next not caring what I got. First week I kept up with it I got ~14.5mpg. Changed plugs, wires, cleaned up the cap/rotor, changed oil & filter. Ran a week & got 17.34mpg. This past week I got 15.5 or so but I think I messed up cause I swapped to my rear tank for a day. The transmission has been shifting late & feels like the converter clutch is kicking in & out while in 3rd gear before it goes into 4th. I have everything to change the trans & plan to this week.
