SOUNDING LIKE AN AMBULANCE

What up guys. Well, think something happened. Roll'n to the Angel game, last night, and when getting on it, on the onramp, well, something made a sound, a REALLY bad sound, along the lines of a pop sound. When that happened, i pulled over, and inspecting it, sounds like the turbo went. With giving it throttle, its pewing out white/blue smoke, and with acceleration, it makes what i best describe, is an ambulance sound, with there syrins on.

I'm pulling the intake right now, to take a gander, but, i'm ask'n you guys, if i'm in the right direction, or you think it could be it/something else, or more issues.....kinda bummed in a big way.

Did you check all the IC boots? Sounds more like you just popped a boot to me......

thanks for the reply. I checked real quik, not to thorough, when it happened, i knew i was done, so i opened up the cooler, and started knocking a few cold ones back.

Thought that as well, but its the "smoke" out the tailpipe, thats leading me think its internal/more than a popped off boot?

Actually, the POP combined with the smoke is what makes me think its a boot. I've popped a few boots and learned quickly that those two together means a boot, at least in my experience.

not good pete

Welll, just pulled the intake, and wasnt too happy, for what i just saw. If i could load up a pic, i'd show you guys, the carnage. The wicked wheel, is in about 10 pieces, the shaft is pointing at 12 o'clock, and right now, i REALLY bummed. I guess now, Clay is in the phone list for a rebuild kit, but i'm wondering what else did i screw up. Thinking of the "dusted" scenerio, but i guess, a compression will tell me that. Thinking now, to pull all the intake tubes and I.C. to remove any dust, but what you guys think are my chances of it being just a rebuild of the turbo?

When it happened, after inspecting it, had to drive it atmost, 1/4mile to get off freeway, at 25mph tops.....this sux.

Yeah, really. What bites, is that i removed the assy few months back, deleting the actuator, pedestal..etc, and thought about rebuilding it then, but i needed the truck back together ASAP.

That's a bummer Timmy. Hopefully just a rebuild but not likely with that kind of damage. Not sure on the '97 wheel.

Are you running a stock turbo? Personally, I wouldn't push a stock turbo over 25psi. They won't hold up very long if you do that on a regular basis. I'd pull off the down pipe and check the condition of the exhaust side wheel. I'll send you a pm on a used turbo I saw.

Hey bud, appreciate the used turbo, havnt read pm yet. Anyway chief, EVERYTHING stock, on my truck, besides whats on my sig, which is "casual" stuff. I run the red wastegate line, on the turbo, so the most boost i see, is 18psi, and thats with the 10k switch being on, which is only when pulling cajon pass or bad lands, out here in so-cal. Other than that, i drive this thing like a granny. Price of fue, causes me to.

Thats why i'm stumped as to why it happened. 108k on the clock, 9k trailer towed about once a month, and at most, round trip, is 500miles. SO, abuse wise, just dont see it happening, on my end. Alright, well, just got home from being towed in, so think i'll start rip'n everything apart...cleaning the I.C., probably pull the plenums, and vacuum/clean out, if anything in there, and pull that da$@ turbo, AGAIN, and see whats up.

Grant, thats for the link. You think, for what happened to mine, that the "guts" of the turbo, where shaft is, bushings..etc, are toast, to where, i cant rebuild the turbo? I guesss, either way, rebuild mine, or buy a used one, i still will want a rebuild kit, to rebuild a used one, or you think its not needed. As where i sit, i think i should rebuild a purchased used one?

I'm not sure, never had to rebuild my turbo. Post some pics when you get things apart and I'm sure others can help you decide.

got everything apart, just cant remember now, if i need to remove the housing/wastegate, to have room to snorkel it out/turbo. Removed the exhaust flange and oil came pouring out. Little bits of metal fragment, minuute franges, in the i.c. boots, on the return side...arghhh

What a bummer, especially the way you drive, nice and easy. Only way to tell is to pull the turbo out, which you can snorkle it out, and take it apart, see if the shaft came in contact with those housings.
