Question about turbo cooldown...

So my mechanic brought up an interesting point as to why he hates trucks with the turbo cooldown feature, but I'm not sure about it either. I guess my question is do they have an override? His point was, if something catastrophic happens, is there some way to override the turbo cooldown to shut the truck off? He was saying that he had a truck come in that had this feature, and he didn't know how to shut it off, and it was a good thing it didn't have anything major wrong with it or he would have just had to sit there and watch the engine tear itself apart while it ran for 5-10 minutes.

You could always pull the FICM fuse if you have to.

Seems a bit drastic/ghetto when there could just be some simple override implemented. I'm really surprised no one has that feature.

You could put an override in the ignition wire from the cooldown timer, or the power wire to the unit.

That would be a much better idea, but again something you would have thought a product designer would have thought of to include.

I had a turbo timer on my old edge tuner (before i knew how bad they were) and all you had to do to override the timer was tap the brake.

Just touch the brake and it should shut down. I think that is how it works so somebody can't steal the truck in cool down mode.

I have always been told that a turbo cool down is a good thing?? Is this wrong? I have one that is built into my starter/alarm an it can be shut down by simply taping the brake pedal.

Am i hurting something by using this feature?

Thanks
Hilgy

You're not hurting a thing by using it Hilgy. I'm sure fomoco60 was referring to the Edge tuner being a bad thing, not the turbo timer.

I actually figured most would have this feature because I knew the ones that come with remote starts do that, but apparently whichever one this specific guy had wouldn't do that because the guy at the shop said he tried everything he could think of. Also, I don't think it would be specifically for theft reasons because if the key isn't turned to the "run" position, it doesn't matter if you hit the brake or not, the shifter won't come out of park.

Yeah like Steve said, you're not hurting your truck. Getting the turbo really hot an then shutting the truck off wears on the turbo over time so the cooldown feature gets your egt's down and let's the turbo get down to a cooler temp before shutting it down.

As stevebricks said I was referring to the edge tuner being bad not the timer.

A long time ago (like late 80's) the need for turbo timers went away....

like when good oils and good turbo's were put in trucks....

Even the oil mfgs say there is no need for them any longer.....

if you think about it how many times (probably none) have you been running such that the turbo was a t full boost and shut down within seconds ?

99 times out of a 100 you probably idled, or went slow on secondary road, or turned into the fuel station..... something to give 5 minutes of 'natural' cool down with air flowing across the system rather than idling sitting still....
but that's my soapbox diatribe for the day
