MPG Help please

I have an 08 King Ranch with the 6.4L Power Stroke. I don't tow/haul much and most of my miles are highway. I only get 12 MPG and am looking to get better through emmissions and/or a chip modification. What would be the best bang for the buck? I was hoping to spend no more than $1500 installed. Also, I live in eastern Oklahoma; so if anyone knows of some good shops in OK, AR, or TX to do the work that would be helpful as well.

Thank you in advance for your advice.

First thing to do is ask some questions about the operation of the truck. Then if you are not having any issues go to the next step.

How often do you regen?
How fast do you drive?
Did you do a lift or bigger tires?
What gears you running?
F250/350/450?

What do your tail pipes look like?

I'm not very mechanical so I'll answer the best I can.

I don't know what "regen" is, I've only had the truck a few months. So as far as I know it's never been done.

I drive pretty fast, alot of interstate driving at 80+

No lift, but I do have the 20" wheels with pretty agressive tires. I don't care for them, but bought the truck that way.

And the tailpipe is split to where it has 2 exhausts; look like about a 3" diameter. But it's whatever is stock with the King Ranch package.

I have no idea on the gears, how would I check?

and F250

Thanks for your help.

Slow it down, less than 2K rpms and stay off the boost is what is going to help the most.

Off subject,
KJLEMING how long have you been running them tires? How are they wearing? I am looking at 35" tires for 18's, and the last 3 quotes I got were $1600 or more. That is more than I am willing to spend! I have been looking at the Federal for 2 months now, just havent heard Good or Bad from anyone.

well, i've only had the truck for 3 months and i bought it with the tires already on it. but i have put 12K miles on them during that time. the wear seems to be okay; although i'll admit that's a pretty short evaluation time. i would say that they aren't bad, but i don't know enough yet to say that they're good (if that makes any sense). i've had some buddies buy the bf goodrich tires and i know they're better than those.

that is two of the problems. speed and thread. Just slowing down will help alot.

As I said earlier to look at your pipes. I should have been a little clearer. They should look close to mine. If so then I think your basic problem is speed.

Yup. Black can mean that you may have an issue. So if yours are fairly clean then slowing down will probably help the most.

OK - Here we go.
2008, 6.4, Job 1.
Banks Intake, Banks Ottoman Sport Tune, DPF back 4" straight, (chrome tip) OEM 18" tires/wheels, no lift, driven conservatively, Diesel Kleen 8oz every fill up.
Hand calc'd mpg city: 14.2mpg.

Today's road trip from Kansas City to Columbia MO and back (roughly 275 miles)
Set cruise at roughly 68-69mph and let er run.
LOM: 17.5mpg, Hand Calc'd: 16:7

For the DPF still in tact - reckon I'll take it.

Sportster
...dpf be gone is next
