It doesnt matter what vehicle the engine is in. If we are talking about durability then the only way to know right now is to look at other applications that the same engines are used in.

The only difference in the 5.0 for the mustang and f-150 is the cam profile and the tuning that i know of. So i would say that if we look at the issues the mustang has had, it would be a good indication of what to expect for the F-150. The mustang hasnt had a single engine related issue that i have heard of other than its ability to melt rear tires.

Same with the Taurus. The Ecoboost changed some tuning and maybe cam profiles, but the engine it self remains unchanged. If we look for maintenance problems over its last 2 years of production, it might give us a good indication of what to expect in the F-150.

Neither of these engines have had any issues in the field to speak of.
Just to piggy-back the comments about the EcoBoost. It has also been in use in the Flex since the 2010 model run, in addition to its use in the SHO Taurus.
And to NotMyHusbandsF150, the EcoBoost engine is basically the same, aside from a slightly different tune being used in the trucks. Just like the 5.0 being the same design, with a slightly altered tune.

Regardless of what the masses say...both engines are stout. You as the consumer just need to figure out which is best for you and your needs.

Agreed, all the available engines in the F-150 are amazing. Glad to see ford brought this one home.

Now i need to figure out how important gas millage is to me. To 6.2l or not to 6.2l. That is the question. Muhahahahah

In all honesty Im hopping to buy a 2012 Screw Fx4 Ecoboost. Lets hope my wife gets over my purchas of a 2011 Mustang GT soon. Haha

It's common knowledge that new products are tested. Myself being an MBA, I've done more research on product development than you could ever realize. However, as a previous poster mentioned, the durability hasn't been tested. Even if they did start rolling them out in test trucks in 2010, that doesn't prove anything. It's like getting the swine flu shot last year but five years later, your nose dries up and falls - there's no way to know how this engine will end up in the long run. I have full faith in Ford and the quality of their products but as a personal preference, I won't buy something the first year it is on the market. I prefer to go with something that has a few years of full performance behind it. Again, that doesn't guarantee anything, as lemons happen... but since you are a man, you probably know all of this already... riiiight.

So I have to ask, why did you buy the 5.0L engine then? It's brand spanking new with new technology and hasn't been used in any other car until 2011.

She didn't. She bought a '10 leftover with the 4.6L

simply pointed out that these engines are not brand new. And anyone that thinks they are have not done any research at all then. They have been put into other applications by ford before the F-150.

Yes the Eco-boost has been around for year or two in a passenger car weighing maybe 4k lbs. Now is it in a 6k + truck and up to about 16k when towing. That is 4 times the load and that is a lot of stress on a power adder engine.
As powerful as the Lightning and Supercharged Harley trucks were, only rated to tow 5k while a std 5.4L was over 7k. The lightning had better brakes and a stronger rearend. Just sayin'
I hope it does work out to be a good engine, but only time will tell.

The lightning also had a shorter wheelbase, and less weight. Probably had softer rear springs as well.

By the way, I now get way better fuel mileage with my 6.2L than I ever did with my previous 2008 5.4L...

That's how I feel about the subject. If you don't quite trust any of Fords new engines yet...Then DONT BUY THEM! There's still a few new 2010's left out there, or you could get a smoking deal on a slightly used 2010 now.

Personally I fully trust the new Engine lineup. I've seen enough proof to apease my mind about any worrys I had of them before. That's while I'll be ording my 2011 FX4 5.0L this summer!

Cheers

Perhaps, but the Screw Harley did not.

When there is a design change the big things do not concern me.They are well tested. Its the little thinks that have bugs.Water leaks, rattles, seal leaks, vibrations, etc. These engines are new but not the truck.I think all these engine will be reliable.Just pick the ones that you need. When I bought a new design 97 F150 with the new 4.6 and transmission I had no problems except for many smalls things, leaks, rattles bad radio, clunks, exhaust rusting rear brakes, etc. and many recalls. With todays quality controls I would not hesitate to buy a complete redesign.
