I have a oil leak from a round cover at the back of the high pressure oil pump. The round cover has a snap ring. What is the cover for, what is behind it?

 

It is rare that the leak is actually on the rear plate. Any leak on the HPOP, discharge hose fittings, plug on the back, engine gasket or "non-serviceable" plug will flow to the rear of the pump and collect on the lip for the c-ring.

You will need to clean the HPOP and engine valley with simple green and rinse with garden hose pressure. Stuff paper towel under and around the pump and take it out for a short run. Pull the paper towels out slowly until you can determine where the actual leak is originating. With that, we can determine how to repair the pump.

 

The oil is leaking at the round cover. The higher the RPM the more it leaks, up to a stream. What I do not know is, can the cover be replaced? Is there an o-ring that is leaking? I do not know what is behind the round cover?

 

There is a single o-ring that seals the cover to the pump. Nothing will fall out when the back plate is removed but the only way that I have been able to replace this o-ring without damaging the new o-ring is by removing the pump from the engine bay.

 

Thanks! Do you know if the o-ring is a seal for that cover? I cannot find any other leak?

To be sure, did you look in that area with inspection mirrors, rags, and good lighting while running it? When I had a leak in the same area, I was convinced it was coming from that same round 'plate/plug' you are referring to, when in fact it was traveling to that area from a brass plug nearby.

It took me a while to track down the leak, but when I did, it was easy to see how it could appear to come from where I thought it did by the way it traveled.

 

Alvin, What was the brass plug to/for? Did you have to pull the pump, was it just loose?

I believe that is the non-servicable plug, which is replaceable but yes you have to pull the pump to fix either leak.

Hi, Woodnthings, do you have cut away of a 95psd HPOP, as i had fix the
non serviceable plug on my truck.
I called ford parts today and they told me they want $921.00 for the HPOP +TAX,then if you can not do the job yourself add about 4 to 5 hrs labor and if all that is wrong with your pump that is the plug which will cost you about $75.00 plus your time quite a savings i think,thanks.
Also is there a spring and check ball under plug can not find out for sure
but i stuck a q-tip down into hole and could not touch bottom,but i am going to put pump back on hope for the best.

 

In Ken's picture, right next to the 'plate', is the plug which leaked on me. It requires an o-ring and Loctite to seal that plug. Bob/Guzzles has that one, and the Loctite is required for it to seal properly.

 

I just noticed your last post. Make sure you use the proper Loctite on that plug or it will not seal right. Ask me how I know. I finally went to a Ford parts counter and paid too much for the right o-ring and Loctite package to get it right. (Needed the truck that day)

Clean and degrease the heck out of the threads before installing. I used Q-tips. Good luck.

gear how do you keep it from so you can put enough torgue on bolt as
