Cure for sticking float?

'65 F100 240, 1 barrel carb, 3 spd.

On March 12, about a month ago, I was driving home 90 miles when half way I stopped at a rest stop and the truck died. I opened the hood, gas was pouring out of the carb everywhere. I figured the float was stuck.

Tapping it didn't seem to do the trick, so I took off the top of the carb, touched the float with my finger, put it back on, started up and have driven with zero problems since that day. Until today.

The float stuck again, right when I had started it and had gone about a block. I did the same procedure, and drove home. While pulling in at my house, it did it again, probably 1 mile from the last place it stopped.

I am no mechanic, I just love to work on stuff, and have a basic understanding. I don't know if what I did was correct or if I made it worse/caused a problem/shouldn't be taking the top off the carb/etc.

What should I do to remedy this sticking float? The carb is a rebuilt unit I put on in 2000.

There is a bit of varnish on the shaft the float rides on. Clean it up and replace the float with a new one. Also check the needle and seat as a piece of dirt will keep it open.

I would rebuild the carb after 11 years.

Thanks Garbz. Not the answer I wanted, but it's what I needed.
