Hello, I just purchased a 73 F100 with what is claimed to be a 390 / C6 combo. What is the easiest way to tell the difference between the 360 and the 390? I ask because I put the VIN into another site on the web and it came back as a 360 equipped truck. The truck is 2WD with a 9" rear end.
Hello again, After posting my request I read a few postings and found that casting numbers would be important. Well here they are: Drivers side block flange just below the head mounting surface has "5H49" punched in right side up and "1450" punched in upside down. On the upper level of this stepped part of the block the letter "N" is punched in. Just below the drivers side exhaust manifold near the front there is a raised casting of "23 01F". On the passenger side of the block just below the front end of the exhaust manifold the raised casting number "06ME".
The absolute best way to tell if you have a 360 or a 390 is to measure the engine stroke. The 360 have a stroke of 3.5 inches and the 390 is at 3.78. Casting numbers can tell you what heads and block you have but the difference in these two engines is all internal.
I found out that the engine is a 360 (1973 model). One thing! Does anyone know what the HP rating and Torque rating is on this engine being in the stock configuration (2 barrel carb)?
You should still measure the stoke or ID the crank when you get a chance. Odds are it is a 360, but mine was quoted as being a 390, and it actually was despit what the VIN said for my 69. These trucks are old, and many things can change over the years.
You definatly have to measure the stroke. WHen I rebuilt my motor, the valve cover tag and VIN both said it was a 360. I measued the stroke and came up with 3.78. Someone before me had done what I was going to do, replace the rotating assembly with 390 parts. Good for me!
