Ford offered the C6 in the lighter duty mid 70's C series as a cheap to purchase / economy special. Due to the high first gear / lack of sufficient gears / gear spread to provide a gear for all road speeds, every truck that i have been around has a two speed rear end. Even with the cost of the two speed rear, it was cheaper to purchase a C6 / two speed than the much better, much heavier Allison with more gears / better gear spread option. You get what you pay for I guess in this case.
At the time, the C6 in big trucks had mixed reviews. You dont see them at all nowdays, so I would hazard to guess that most of them have been retired many years ago when there owners got tired of replacing / rebuilding the transmissions. The C6 is tough, but it was never designed to run for miles heavily loaded in second gear, which is where it would fail most often at, especialy if the driver did not use low range on the two speed rear. Definatly pushing the envelope if you are moving more than 15k - 17k.
