Breather Cap Oil Leak

Breather Cap Oil Leak
New to the forum and new to old diesels. I tried searching the forum a little to no avail. Still trying to figure these forums out, never used em, so sorry for any repeats.
I picked up a nice 84 f250 XLT the other day with the 6.9L. From what i can tell i am leaking oil out of the breather cap. From my understanding, it could possibly be bad compression or my rings might be a little too worn and its causing crankcase oil to spurt up there?? By all means correct me if im wrong. I am just trying to understand what my issues may be, and the quickest easiest fixes are.
My thought were maybe a rigged up catch can for any oil leaking out taht i can just pour it back into the truck after it collects? or is it a major issu that the truck is leaking the oil from that location?
If anyone has any thoughts or any possible causes feel free to chime in.
Thanks in advance!

Buellrider,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI forum.
We all get along very well here, and between all of us...any question can be answered
When you say breather cap, are you referring to the oil fill cap at the front of the engine?
I wouldn't catch it and then put it back in the engine...if it's coming out, it's bound to get dirty in the catch can.
If you pull the oil fill cap off, do you see excessive blow-by?

Sorry for not being more exact. Haha. And thank u for the welcome! When the motor is running and I pull off the oil fill cap I can see a small amount of smoke coming out. Smell like burnt oil. The cap I was referring to though is the small cap on the right valve cover. From what I was told was it was the brethaer cap, bunch of small holes with a small sponge inside. Oil leaks from that minorly during idle but more so during driving. From a short 2-3mi drive I lose maybe a few ounces. Nothing serious but something I hope is not the result of a major issue.

Timeout.
Does your truck have a turbo?
If not, then this breather in the valve cover is something not stock.
This is my engine:
Sounds like someone added that, which isn't the end of the world. It's similar to someone building a Road Draft Tube.
The stock setup uses a CDR valve. If you pull your air cleaner (If Non-turbo) there is a grey tuna-can looking thing. The bottom has a neck that slides down into the engine, the top slides into the intake manifold.
This is my CDR.
And this is why you need to blow this area VERY well with the air compressor or sweep it clean before pulling the CDR. All this crap will fall right in the hole, which goes directly into the engine.

Any chance you could get a picture?

That picture was right after replacing my head gaskets 2 winters ago.
Currently, my engine is FAR from that nice shiny state.
I could probably wipe a layer of oil/grime/dust off of it and it "might" look close to that.
I keep that picture, because everything is easier to spot when using that picture in a thread.
If I took a picture of the engine now, it would be tough to tell what a new member is looking at.
Try adding a gallon of oil with the engine running with the high idle on, it likes to spray

Yes guys, the truck has a turbo. From what I was told that wasn't stock in 84? Im 22 so im used to newer vehicles so excuse my limited knowledge. The tuna can on those motors is right where mine is. But mine looks much different. If anyone has been to autozone lately, I saw the same cap on the shelf. Its an edelbrock cap, easier to see in my pic ill post soon maybe its just the wrong kind. Pics to come in about an hour or so!
