New Diesels 6.7 Owner Questions

First, I would like to thank everyone for there inputs on this great forum since you all have made my decisions on what to get and not to get on my newly order 6.7 ford F350 super duty without the pressure of any salesman.

I was not in the Market for a new diesel but my 2002 7.3L super duty with 85,000 miles was taken from my possession when I was passing threw Albuquerque in January (Sick Feeling) . As you can see I had low miles on it due to fact the I was only using this truck to haul my 5th wheel across the Rockies Mountains and goose neck flat bed trailer for other things and hunting trips. (I know some may say I am wasting my money due to the usage of the truck but I will never go back to gas when pulling heavy loads due to fact that I was getting 2 to 3 MPG when pulling the camper threw the rockies and being broken down on the side of the roads Not once, Not twice, but Three times which the cost of the repairs made the difference of just owning a diesel with a heck of lot more power.

With all that said I have a few questions for anyone that would be so kind to answer since the my truck will be order this week and delivered in May or June according to some of your post. (Will have to wait and see.)
  • When the truck is delivered we are wanting to go camping right away, Is it best to hookup and break in the truck with a 5th wheel or take a 1000 miles trip before hooking up the RV.
  • On my 2002 diesel I use to put a diesel additive called Stanadyne Performance Formula diesel additive on every tank of gas. Will I be trowing money away if I continue to use it or well worth the investment to protect the injectors. (Just not too familiar with the 6.7).

Again thanks for the input on this great forum.
Martin

P.S. As for the user name that I choose you can see I am a huge elk hunter so that is why the name.

the earlier engines 7.3s really weren't tuned for the ULSD fuel, and the additives helped..

the 6.4 and 6.7 are designed with this fuel in mind.. and most don't see any real difference using the same type additives they used before on the 7.3's..

so, break it in, tow a bit, then try some.. for me I see NO change (on my 6.4)

I thought the owners manual said 500 miles before towing.
I pulled my TT this past weekend with 650 miles on it.

Thanks everyone!

Great shooting Video.

I will then have to take a trip over the weekend when it arrives over the rockies to brake it in prior to heavy Towing since we want to start going camping right away. As for the additive I will try both ways to see if it makes any difference and will let you know.

Again Thanks

Page 3 from the 2011 Super Duty Power Stroke owners guide supplement:

NEW VEHICLE BREAK-IN
Your vehicle does not need an extensive break-in. Try not to drive continuously at the same speed for the first 1,000 miles (1,600km) of new vehicle operation. Vary your speed to allow parts to adjust themselves to other parts.

Drive your new vehicle at least 500 miles (800km) before towing a trailer. Make sure you use the specified engine oil by checking the engine oil specification chart under Engine oil in the Maintenance and Specifications chapter.

With the last 4 trucks my company has purchased we have not had the luxury of doing the official recommended break in period before towing anything.

So, that being said, we don't tow more than 10K pounds routinely and we don't pull over the Rockies.

I would try to break in properly with your heavy load and the hard terrain. Around here I really don't think it's that big of a deal.

The 2011 owner's manual says 1000 miles before towing, the 2011 diesel supplement says 500 miles before towing.

So when can I hook up to my 20K fiver and get out of the cold weather?

The engine is what needs to be broken in-go with the diesel supplement. You will be fine with 500 miles.

Good question, obviously the 500 mile is the official answer but seriously, if I were choosing cold weather vs. 500 miles on the truck, I would hook up right now and hit it.

Or, I would just burn a day and drive 500 miles so I can get outta dodge tomorrow. Cold weather is fine in Dec. Jan. and Feb. Then, I'm way done with it.

If it were me, I'd hook up with as few as a couple hundred miles...but not push it. No Wide open throttle and try to keep your speed down for the first few hundred miles.

Obviously try to get at least 500 or so before towing.
