Found metal shavings in my oil today

The light smoke or vapor is probably normal blowby. The different pulsing from number 8 isint suprising given its position. You could switch the number 8 injector with another and see if the noise follows the injector (is number 8 an AD or long lead?). A scan with AE to look at perdels would be useful. Since the valve cover is off I would pull the glow plugs and run a compression check as the noise appears to be coming from that side.

Ok. If valve train has been ruled out a compression check would be next on my list. Wouldn't hurt to inspect under the other valve cover as well and you can check both sides for compression numbers. If there was a broken ring source of metal shavings I would think you would see a significant difference in perdel reading on the individual cylinder though.

I took the valve cover off just a few minutes ago and everything looks in order at first glance. I started the engine up cold to see if the injectors where spitting oil and they were. I put my fingers on top of each injector solenoid one at a time to see if I could feel any vibration and I could feel some vibration on #1, #3, & #7. The most pulsing or vibration was coming from #7. I then stuck my finger into the oil that had settled below on the top of the cylinder head and had a pretty large amount of metal bits on my finger.
I also noticed some light smoke coming out of either cylinder 7 or 5 and it seemed to dissipate slightly as it began to warm up. All the pushrods And valves seemed to be moving correctly. I felt like the engine noise was most prominent towards the cylinder 7 end of the engine.
Any ideas out there?
The metal is ferrous.

For there to be metal shavings under the valve covers, the shavings would have to be coming from either something the oil is passing through after the oil filter (perhaps something in the high pressure system or injectors) or from some part under the valve cover. The filter should catch anything large enough for you to see from the bottom end before it gets carried up to the top end.
But the filter would have to be FULL of debris for that to happen.

By any chance, are the metal bits only on bank 1? Is the oil in the driver's side head nice and clean? If so, that could indicate the source of metal is from one of the injectors on bank 1 (possibly a poppet valve destroying itself?)

judging by this, conclusion was a ford re-manufactured long block......that didn't last to long https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...n-kc-area.html
