TAB and TAD Solenoids

Hello all,

I've been lurking on the forums for about the last 4 months or so after buying the following:

1996 Ford F150 XLT Regular Cab Long Bed 4X4 with a 302/5.0L V8, 140K Miles

Mods: K&N FIPK Intake, Magnaflow Y Pipe with Catalytic Converters, Magnaflow SI/DO Muffler with Custom Bent 3" Dual exhaust and 3" Magnaflow Tips, Optima Yellow Top, RJM Injection Technologies 160A Alternator and wires, 4 AWG Charge Cable, Frost King Self Adhesive Duct Insulation (Sound Dampening in the doors). AMSOIL ATF, AMSOIL 5W20 Synthetic Motor Oil and EA Filter, AMSOIL Coolant.

The previous owner was a fire department (used as a service vehicle), but I ended up buying it from a wholesale dealer who acquired it as a trade-in.

Anyway, I'm having the hardest time trying to source two parts in particular. The Air Bypass Solenoid (TAB) and Air Diverter Solenoid (TAD). I'm almost 100% positive these need to be replaced as part of a P0411 error code. Why? Because I've already replaced or checked all the other parts that could be the issue with this code ie. vaccuum lines, air pump, etc. All the EGR related parts have also been replaced, so its definitely not those either. Anyone have any idea where to get these two parts? I've tried O Reilly, Autozone, Advance Auto, NAPA, Rockauto.com, and all the usual online places. Parts Numbers for these would also be helpful or alternative name, because I'm pretty sure I've tried every combination possible to get a postive result and nothing has worked.

Tried searching on Google, Yahoo, in this forum and the multitude of other forums on the web with no success. All the suggestions I've seen online so far recommend going to a pick n pull and taking off of existing truck, but I'd prefer getting new ones, so I don't have to deal with this code anymore (will need to pass smog soon and won't be able to with this code popping up daily).

Besides this everything seems to be running ok, especially for an old truck, aside from several other replacement or upgrade items that I have planned

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Also, if there is anyone in the Southern Illinois/St. Louis Metro/Metro East area on here that likes working on these trucks and doesn't mind teaching a newcomer to home auto repair (although I have to admit over the last 4 months I've learned quite a bit working on this thing myself), I'd be happy to learn as well as lend a helping hand on any projects that require a second set of hands working on any of the nice looking trucks I've seen on here. Thanks in advance.

The junkyard is a good source for these components, you could collect several copies of each just to make sure you get a good set. Your problem could also be that the vacuum lines are attached to the wrong solenoids, may try switching them.

If P0411 code is the upstream air injection it can be caused by plugged passages in the heads. The ECM is looking for an excess of oxygen when this code sets. When the air flow is to the heads (you can reconnect the vacuum lines temporarily to force this for testing) if the air pump starts dumping air through the relief valve that that would be your problem.

Junkyard will be my next try, as you said collect several copies of each and hope for a good one. In the meanwhile though, what are my options for new/OEM ones? The dealerships don't seem to be able to source these either?

Have tried switching vaccuum lines as well. Followed vaccuum line routing diagrams to ensure proper hookup too.

I found the part numbers for the TAB/TAB solenoids at MotorcraftService.com:

E7TZ-9H465-A
E7TZ-9H465-B

Unfortunately I do not know which is the TAB or the TAD. You might check with PartsGuyEd for the parts availability and descriptions ( PartsGuyEd.com)

9H465-A > TAD
9H465-B > TAB
One is $35 and the other $75. I replaced mine a few months ago with new ones. I purchased mine thru the dealer. The one is becoming harder to get so it's the $75.

There's a couple of tests to diagnose the TAD and TAB if you think they are bad.

Hope that helps.

rla2005 and timbersteel Thanks very much for the numbers and details. Looks like my local Ford dealership can order the parts...too bad the parts department is never open for me to pick them up, but that's a different problem altogether. I should be able to get these things eventually and the part numbers at least got the dealership to the right parts. Thanks again.

Your Welcome and Thanks for the link Rla2005. That's a lot cheaper than $75! If I ever need new ones for the 300, I know where to get them!
