Not obvious, but if you look a while, there are some clues. I'll post a follow up picture for the right answer.

I'll try not to give it away, but you're almost in Mexico

Doh, you've been there too often. I thought it might be a bit more difficult...

I've driven past it quite a few times, but have never stopped.

Nothing is difficult for Mr. SoCal. He's the real life inspiration for the Dos Equis guy.

Excellent idea for a thread, BTW. We should do more of these.

Agreed, we should!
I wonder just how many tour buses stop there.
I suspect The Dummy would be very good at this.

The
Big Dummy has been to almost as many places in CA as Huell has (at one time, it was more places).
Tower is in Jacumba, off Hwy 8.

Ding ding ding - the winner. Top of Mountain springs grade. If you get a chance, take the trail behind the old gas station at the Jacumba exit to find a bunch of rusty bed springs - joke was to visit the Mtn springs.
Next pic: where am i?

If this location is Red Rock State Park, Jawbone Canyon or Panamint Springs, it's in So Cal. Red Rock & Panamint are east of 395, Jawbone is west.
I believe anything north of Bishop is considered NorCal. There's not too many Mesquite Trees growin' north of Bishop until you get to Gardnerville.
That ancient industrial powerplant looks like it's eating its own fuel tank. The head is gone, so when it was removed, the block was prolly found to be cracked.

Is that a "fuel tank" or an air tank. Looks like a big compressor sleeve sticking out of the side of that thing.
Looks farther north than Red Rock or Jawbone.
I'm going to guess up around Olancha, maybe north of that yet.
