You have to go back up to Furnace Creek and head toward Nevada, you pass Zabriskie and turn right on Furnace Creek Road then go to Dantes Peak road.
It takes you right to the top. You can see across to mount Whitney on a clear day. Awesome.

Something else to do the next time we're up there, probably in February or so.
Thanks for the tip, Marc!

We've been here before, but thought I'd share a few more from Schmidt's mine...
William 'Burro' Schmidt and His Tunnel to Nowhere | Kern | Artbound | KCET
Boys were from 3-10 and a enjoyed digging and throwing rocks and wielding campfire sticks.
Finally got the washers game together for some long games. Thx Bob!

I thought it might be a tortoise. Glad you put it back safely.
You probably didn't go up the lower 395, but this year they have installed new fencing on both sides of the road. Along the Boron area. Odd thing is, that fence is only about 12 - 18 inches high. The bottom is buried. There are wide openings wherever a road passes through, but the ends of the fence at the openings have a curl back on itself. If that makes any sense. I finally figured out that that has to be desert tortoise fencing. That's about the only animal that wouldn't just jump over the fence, and the curl at the openings makes the tortoises turn and crawl the other way. Interesting, and it goes on for miles and miles on both sides of the road, so they spent some serious public largess.
