I have a 2010 145" Screw 2wd with the 26 gal tank. There's a complete 36 gal tank off a wrecked 2009 I can get my hands on here locally. Does anyone know if I would have any problem swapping the tank out?? I plan to get the complete 36 gal tank, with pump, filter, sender, straps,etc.

I would think that is would be pretty straight forward especially since you are gettin all the necessary parts to do the job. I can take some pictures of my 36 gal if you need a reference.

 

I don't think there is any difference under the truck between the 4wd and 2wd that would effect gas tank placement/securing on the 36 gal tank. But I thought it would be worth the ask....we've all seen strange things that should have been easy!

 

It should be no problem. Looking on the Ford web site at last years models specs and capacities, the 26 and 36 gallon tanks were available in all cab configurations. 26 gallon being standard and 36 being optional.

I'd love to put one in my '11. But since it is not offered as an option on the Ecoboost I'm wondering if it is a compatibility thing, or if Ford is just being hard headed.

I think but do not know for certain that we'd need to make the fuel pump in our 26 gallon work in the 36 gallon tank because we've direct injection which is much higher pressure.

What we need to do is petition Ford of offer a 36 gallon upgrade as an accessory.

 

Yes, we'd need a parts guy to tell us if part #s are same for the two pumps. The tank option would've been better, you're right.

 

It seems like Ford is intentionally holding back some of it's cool ideas to help boost sales from year to year. I'll wager that the 36 gallon tank will find it's way into the 2012 EB trucks.

 

fwiw....I ran the vin # on the truck with the 36 gal tank. It has the same 5.4 motor I've got, so no fuel pressure/fuel pump compatibility problems there. The folks with Ecoboost would definitely have that issue. I cannot imagine that the all-in-one fuel pump assembly would interchange between tanks. The fuel pick-up point has to be a little deeper with the bigger tank.

 

Personally, I miss the days of dual fuel tanks. My dad's '94 F-250 had them, and they were quite nice on the longer road trips.

Both my '09 F-350 & '08 Lincoln Mark LT dwarf that truck in size. Unfortunately, the only option for more fuel capacity in them is to go for an aftermarket replacement tank (like Transfer Flow's 46 gal.) and live with inaccurate fuel level & miles to empty readings or give up bed space for a transfer tank. The former is a more viable option, but those tanks carry a hefty price tag. A factory option would be a fraction of the cost, and it would be integrated into the system--i.e. no false instrument readings.

 

ecoboost's high pressure pump is on the valve cover. low pressure pump in the tank so it still may work to put the bigger tank on an ecoboost

 

Actually, the single 36 gallon tank gives You more volume than the old dual tank setup. With less parts to fail.

 

100% agree with this. My front tank rusted out, the pump went bad, the transfer valve failed and the transfer switch was replaced as well during my ownership of the truck. It took Ford until the 1997 model change to realize that dual tanks were not in our best interests.

Now we get a 36 gal plastic tank. More fuel and less future hassle.

 

We have an older Chevy 3500 utility body with dual tanks in my Fire Dept. All I will say is what a hassle.
