Question DISTRIBUTOR GEAR, HARD? 1984/302

When replacing the distributor gear in a 1984 f150 with a 302, should I use a hardened steel gear? or cast Iron or bronze gear? I am not sure for this year, and don't want to eat the cam gear up? anyone know for sure? the aftermarket distributor I want to use has a steel gear on it now (Procomp), Thanks, vic

Why not ask the Procomp people? If you have a stock cam, they should know what it needs. If you have a aftermarket cam, you might need to call the cam people.

Smile Thanks good Iddea, I did, good to go!!!

they say is comes with a gear that can be used in cast iron and steel applications, so I guess I'm good to go...the gear itself feels kind like aluminum but harder? it is an alloy of some sort, Thanks, Franklin

Sounds like the gear might be a PM part (powdered metal) part. We use PM parts for pinions in hydraulic actuators. Tooling is reasonable and if designed correctly very little additional machining is required. The suppliers of this technology can do quite a bit with the metallurgy to get good wear pair characteristics as well.
