Removing 02 Explore stock radio

I searched the Forums and didn't find anyone with my same issue. Does anyone know how to remove the 6 CD stock radio from a 02 Ford Explorer? My cds are stuck inside and I thought removing the unit i can then take radio aprt to get to cds.

I think your 2002 is pretty similar to my 2004. On my 2004 the trim panel around the center stack snaps in place. You need to carefully get something between the soft dash pad and the trim panel, get one corner started and carefully work your way around the panel. Once you have the trim out of the way you can access the screws that hold the radio in place.

Does that one have the little holes in the trim or around the edge?

You need a tool for those:

Amazon.com: OTC 7575 Ford Radio Removal Tool: Automotive

You can make one out of a coat hanger:

I would just buy the tool, many people have reported that the coat hanger method, while cheap, does not always work since it lacks the little ***** on the end to lock into the fitting. The proper tool is so much easier to use.

The "tool" won't work with the 2002. I just pulled up the procedure in the factory service manual. It's just like my 2004:

Audio Unit

Removal and Installation

1. CAUTION:
The removal and installation procedures apply to all original equipment instrument panel mounted radio chassis. Do not use radio removal tool (holes in radio face are not used).

Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «Section 414-01».

2. Remove the instrument panel (IP) center finish panel.

3. Remove the radio chassis screws.

4. Remove the radio.
1 Disconnect the radio antenna lead-in cable.
2 Disconnect the electrical connectors.
5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Not that hard...

I'm just going to say this, I'm a girl, with no mechanic experience and I pulled the exact same 6-disc changer out of the dash board and installed a kenwood with usb port. No problems. Did a little bit of research. Yes, you have to pull the entire center portion out (in ours, it is all silver colored) press around the edges, you'll find where the locked portions are.

Did this about three years ago on an '03 - same stock radio.

Not sure you won't destroy the radio taking it apart, though. Look on Ebay for a replacement. We sold ours on there.
